This week, you had an opportunity to consider the importance of ensuring learning experiences that are developmentally appropriate, as well as challenging, and to discuss strategies that special educators can use to ensure these types of learning experiences occur. In this assignment, you will assume the role of the special educator working with Mr. Franklin. You will provide feedback for a developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experience for the class. Your feedback will also consider the specific needs of Manual, a special education student who was first introduced in ESE610. Specific details for Manual’s needs are available for your reference in the Instructor Guidance.
Using support from your assigned reading, the Instructor Guidance, and the discussions, submit the following for evaluation. Use the below guidelines for creating your written assignment. If you have questions about the assignment or the rubric, please contact your instructor before the due date.
Instructions: Compose an email response to Mr. Franklin’s original email requesting your assistance. Include the following components in the response and use support from at least two scholarly sources, in addition to the textbook. Before submitting, review your assignment to be sure it meets the expectations of performance in the Grading Rubric. If you have questions concerning the expectations for this assignment, please contact the instructor before the due date.
Dear Special Educator,
I am very excited for our upcoming unit on geometry. I recently sat in on a webinar on place-based and project-based learning. They called it PBL2. Sounds interesting, right? Since we work in the inner city, and most of our students live in apartments with very little green space, I thought it would be cool to create a garden based on the concepts we have introduced in geometry. I think Manual will appreciate this because, just last week, he was telling me that he was annoyed that there were not any parks in his neighborhood where he could take his little sister to play.
Please see my description of the lesson below. I would love your feedback. Since you are the expert in the field of special education, I left the differentiation section blank and would like you to fill it in based on Manual’s needs and those students who have Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals in the classroom. I just finished my last period prep time and I am ready for the weekend. I wanted to talk to you before the weekend, but we must have missed each other. As we will be teaching this on Monday, I wanted you to have the attached lesson plan.
Thanks for the help,
Mr. Franklin
Content Expectations:
Introduction (1 point): In one paragraph, thank Mr. Franklin for asking you to review the lesson plan. Be sure to applaud him for recognizing the importance of your role in helping to ensure that Manual’s learning experiences are relevant, developmentally appropriate, and challenging. Include a description of why you feel it is important to work together in providing support to Manual and other students with learning challenges.
Feedback (3 points): In two to three paragraphs, use the Feedback Sandwich method, described in this week’s guidance to provide specific and timely feedback on the lesson itself. At a minimum, provide a strength, an area of need, and encouragement for future planning. Based on the week’s learning outcomes, provide feedback on the lesson, focusing specifically on developmentally appropriate practice and challenging material.
Strategies (3 points): In a bulleted list, identify at least five strategies for differentiating the lesson

. At least three of your strategies must be geared toward Manual’s specific needs and identified with his name. The remaining strategies may be general, in order to meet the needs of a diverse classroom. In one to two paragraphs, provide a rationale for each of your strategies.
Closing (0.5 point): In one short paragraph, close the reply to Mr. Franklin with a positive message about your ability to co-create lessons that meet the needs of all students in the classroom.
Written Communication Expectations:
Length Requirement (0.25 points): Two to three pages, not including the title and references pages.
Syntax and Mechanics (0.25 points): Display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling and grammar.
Source Requirement (0.25 points): At least two outside sources, in addition to the course text. All sources on the references page need to be used and cited correctly within the body of the assignment.
APA Formatting (0.25 points): Use APA 6th edition formatting consistently throughout the assignment.
Next Steps: Review and Submit the Assignment
Review your assignment, utilizing the Grading Rubric, to ensure you have achieved the distinguished levels of performance for each criterion. Next, submit your document no later than Day 7.
Recommendation:
The MASE program provides you with the opportunity to create an online portfolio that can be used in your career development and professional practice. Throughout the program, you will have various assessments that can be included in this e-portfolio and will be finalized in the last course of the MASE program, ESE699. You may select this assignment and subsequent coursework to be included as artifacts. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged you save your coursework on a flash-drive (e.g., a USB removable drive) or store in a cloud-based option, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or other similar applications.

For this task, you will need to identify 8 new quantitative research articles from the NCU library. First, choose four from the following six variables: Mood, Motivation, Performance, Happiness, Leadership, Anxiety. Then, locate at least two quantitative original research articles for each variable and examine how the variable has been operationalized. For each variable, note the references of the papers you have found and briefly explain how the variable was operationalized (e.g., Mood was assessed by …). Next, explain how well you think each variable has been assessed in the papers you have chosen. In your evaluation, consider how the authors in each article explain why the way they defined and measured each variable was appropriate. Ethical Reflections in Biology
In this course you have learned about many relevant biology issues from the past and in the present that have ethical implications. While most of us have an idea what ethics is, here is a summary:
Ethics, or moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that involves using critical thinking and rational reflection to understand and evaluate moral principles and systems of moral valuation within cultures, communities, and social groups. Ethical concerns deal with issues of right and wrong or with what is what is beneficial to the well-being of individuals as well as society in general.
________________________________________________________
This assignment asks you to reflect on the ethical aspects of a topic related to biology. You may use the topic you did your research on or any other topic that interests you in the course so far that lends itself to ethical analysis. Your reflection may be from the perspective of the individual, a particular social group or community, or society as a whole. Some questions that come up in such a reflection might focus on:
What are the basic rights and responsibilities as members of society and how do they apply to the situation at hand?
What counts as right or wrong, and why? Who decides?
What is the best way for people to behave toward others as well as oneself? What constitutes a life of human flourishing and well-being?
There are no simple answers to these questions because, among other reasons, our concepts of ethics have been derived from a variety of religious, philosophical, or cultural traditions or milieus and may be very different for different individuals. In this assignment, there is no particular right or wrong answer; the idea here is to simply reflect on some aspect of human endeavor within the biological sciences that has moral relevance and could be subject to ethical analysis. Consider in particular the ideas, concepts, principles, and theories we study in this course,
Please watch the following video, “Ethical Reasoning in Action,” (14.43 minutes):
which lays out eight “key questions” that we might use to evaluate the ethical dimensions of a situation. After reading the brief account of ethics as a branch of philosophy above and viewing the video, write a personal reflection essay of around 500 words (minimum) on a biology-related topic of your choice.
The areas of ethical concern discussed in the video are:
Fairness
Outcomes
Responsibilities
Character
Liberty
Empathy
Authority
Rights
Pick one or more of these areas of ethical concern as a way to begin probing and pondering your selected topic.
First, reflect on why the topic you selected presents an ethical issue, a problem of right or wrong, or relates to a morally questionable circumstance or situation. How might different people or groups see the issue or problem? Why might your topic generate moral controversy? Is there a way to judge between competing or opposing views?
Please note, your task is to identify an ethical issue or concern within the topic you’ve selected and then to consider different ethical viewpoints on the issue, not to necessarily take a stand or decide what is right or wrong in an absolute sense. You may express your personal beliefs on the topic and explain their origin within your own learning and experience.
*This is a personal reflection and will not be shared with your classmates.
