Pay particular attention to the physical and psychological violence that slaves suffer. Note both violence against Douglass and against other slaves, such as Demby. Why is the violence staged publicly?
Frederick Douglass: Narrative of the Life (What the topic is about)
Douglass’s Narrative is both an autobiography and an abolitionist tract. Douglass persuades us to condemn slavery as an institution, one that provides wealth and power to whites at the expense of blacks.
In fact, we should read Douglass’s book as a kind of exposé. Douglass reveals the mechanisms of slavery so that we may see how it works to subjugate and to oppress. At the same time we watch Douglass overcome the system to achieve his own freedom and to work for the freedom of others.
In a research paper of at least five pages and using four secondary, critical sources, analyze Douglass’s Narrative to explain how slavery works as a system, an institution that affects the slave’s life from birth until death. Your paper should show both the mechanisms that enslave Douglass and the means by which he overcomes the system to achieve freedom.
Topics to Consider (These are what the paper’s paragraphs should be about)
Analyze Douglass’s family, especially his relationship with his mother. Explain why the system separates slave children from their mothers at a young age. Note also Douglass’s uncertainty about the identity of his father. What has family to do with inheritance and wealth? Why would society not recognize the slave children of white fathers?
Consider the slaves’ poor living and working conditions as part of the system that keeps slaves subjugated. Note what Douglass says about his relative discontentment whenever his standard of living improves.
Pay particular attention to the physical and psychological violence that slaves suffer. Note both violence against Douglass and against other slaves, such as Demby. Why is the violence staged publicly?
Once Douglass first learns to read, he dedicates himself to reading at every opportunity. Explain why slaveholders prevented slaves from learning to read and note especially the effect on Douglass of reading The Columbian Orator. Analyze carefully Douglass’s point about only now being able to articulate the injustices of slavery. What do the books provide him?
Note Douglass’s victory over Covey in a fist fight. Explain the effect of that incident on Douglass and what it teaches us about violence and slavery. What is the relationship between the trauma Douglass suffers as a child and the restoration of his manhood as an adult?
Analyze carefully Douglass’s financial agreement with Hugh Auld when Douglass works on the docks in Baltimore. How does hiring his own time provide Douglass with the means to escape and overcome slavery? Why is his time so important? What does he do with it? How does his experience working in the shipyards of Baltimore reveal the problems of slavery in a wage-based economy?
When citing secondary sources, use the critical articles that I will attach. Have to use these peer-reviewed critical articles, not criticisms from the web. Limit your analysis to the Narrative. Do not address Douglass’s later life.
Do not use other sources than the Narrative and the 4 sources provided

Is exercise really medicine
PART 1
Reflect back on the past few weeks of exercise challenges and tests. Do you feel like the outcomes of these assessments accurately portray your current state of health? What area of fitness do you think you are most lacking? What are two TANGIBLE ways that you could set out to improve the area/areas most lacking? (Note that these are not necessarily “best case scenarios” but rather two ways that are practical for you to implement where you are in your life right now).
PART 2
Picture yourself in the doctor’s office. You receive the news of a new diagnosis. “But you’re in luck” the doctor says, “We have a treatment that can manage the condition and possibly reverse it.” Knowing that sounds too good to be true you ask the obvious next question, “What are the side effects?” He smiles and says, “No negative side effects. And you will likely notice an improvement in your sleep quality, energy levels, and mood.” He fills out the prescriiption sheet and hands it to you…
Prescriiption pad with “30-60 minutes of daily exercise” recommended
There is plenty of evidence to support regular exercise as a mechanism for prevention and treatment for so many conditions. Fitness levels have a direct correlation to longevity. Knowing all of this, why do you think people are willing to pay more money for prescriiptions they have to take regularly than a pair of walking shoes? Read the two short articles below and share your opinions about the readings.
