Patient–Centered Care—At First Contact
Nurses and patient-centered care (PCC) go hand-in-hand. Nurses enjoy taking care of patients in a holistic, personalized, relationship-based way that honors the patients’ preferences, needs, and values. In its landmark book, Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001, p. 40), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) defined patient-centered care as “…providing care that is respectful and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values—ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.”

This is the last week in which we are reviewing health assessment techniques. We end by covering cognitive assessments and musculoskeletal and neurological examinations. The purpose of this discussion is for you to reflect on your relationships with your patients and to identify ways that you can strengthen your PCC approaches beyond health interviews and assessments.

As you move forward in the program, you will learn more about encouraging patients to be engaged at every level of care design and implementation within the health care system. After all, PCC is connected to improved quality and patient outcomes, and you will learn more about that too!

Choose two of the six dimensions of patient-centered care (PCC), listed below, on which to focus for this Discussion.
Think about how you might implement the two dimensions you selected into your health interview and assessment process in order to improve quality in patient collaboration and outcomes.

Facilitating Patient Engagement With Health IT Systems
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act calls on health care organizations to develop meaningful use–based patient portals. Patient outcomes are improved when patients participate and are engaged in their own health care. In this week’s Discussion, consider the importance and potential benefits of patient-centered care as it relates to the HITECH Act’s mandate that health care organizations utilize patient portals in order to actively support patient engagement.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Reflect on the benefits of patient portals, how these portals engage patients and their families in patient-centered care, and how they are changing the patient–provider relationship.
Consider the effects of patient-generated health data on the continuity, quality, and safety of care.

Health Literacy—Developing Patient Education Materials
Health information literacy has become an important aspect of quality care that is also critical for patient safety and culturally competent care. In this Assignment, you are asked to create an educational handout aimed at improving health literacy in your community around a particular health topic. This educational handout should both attract and educate users.

For this Assignment:

Select a health issue of interest to you.
Identify a specific population that you will seek to educate about this issue.

An awareness of environmental and societal issues is important for the engineer, because, over time, greater demands are being made on the world’s natural resources. Furthermore, levels of pollution are ever increasing. Materials engineering decisions have impacts on the consumption of raw materials and energy, on the contamination of our water and atmosphere, on human health, on global climate change, and on the ability of the consumer to recycle or dispose of spent products.
