Your second Artifact of Learning was a mini-inquiry, a short delve into a topic. Now, after delving into a focused topic, with database research, you’ll practice synthesizing sources toward a One-Page, Three-Article Explanatory Synthesis.
What you will need:
One blank page.
Three articles.
synthesis matrix filled-in with specific takeaways from the three articles.
Critical thinking skills.
Process Steps:
Within your synthesis matrix, highlight, underline, or label specific overlaps, comparisons, contrasts, trajectories, etc.
What specific areas of the matrix seem most important? Identify them.
What seems most important, prevalent, obvious? What stands out?
What seems useful to compare? What overlaps do you see?
What specific contrasts or opposing viewpoints seem important?
Have you learned something new, based on putting these three articles together? What have you learned?
What related topics, questions, or ideas, might be useful to continue to explore?
Choose a structure. How will you begin to explain the relationships between your three articles? Chronologically? By themes? By comparisons & contrasts?
Whatever you choose, do not provide a list of the three sources with simple summary. Summary is not synthesis.
Develop an explanatory thesis statement.
Work toward a thesis statement that synthesizes the main points in your chosen structure.
Develop your topic sentences based on your answers to the questions above
Develop your body paragraphs to support the claims in your topic sentences.
Wrap it up in one page. If you go longer than a page, exercise your revision and editing skills.

Relevant author interviews or biographies, historical articles relevant to the era of the writing or setting of the work, or other professional articles related to the subject matter may also be acceptable for this assignment. If you choose a source of that nature, be sure to use any quotes or info from the source to help you advance your thesis, and not simply to offer additional info that is not necessarily directly related to the actions and elements of the text. You may also want to check with me about your sources if you have any questions about the credibility or usability of any of your research findings.

The focus of your thesis and analysis will come from you, but you must also demonstrate that you have engaged with other critics’ ideas regarding the text you have chosen to analyze. Your essay will be structured around your main points, but occasionally integrating and/or acknowledging related research of others will enhance your own work and show that you have become familiar with the field of literary scholarship as it relates to your particular subject.

Remember that your promary objective in a paper like this is to say something insightful and worthwhile about the text that your reader may not have considered. You want to open your readers’ eye to a way of under standing the text that sheds light on both the text in general and, in a larger sense, the human experience.
