What advice can they offer someone who is interested in a death-related profession – Go to therapy and find ways that help you to relieve stress.
Interview with a death-related professional
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to locate appropriate professionals in the community who are involved in the field of dying, death or bereavement and to develop an understanding of the nature of their work, their clientele and their organization. This assignment provides you with the opportunity to connect what you have learned in this course with the perspectives of professionals who are currently working full-time in the field of dying, death, or bereavement. Examples of appropriate professionals to interview are grief counselors, hospice nurses or hospice social workers, death educators, physicians or nurses who have experience caring for terminally ill patients or patients who have died, funeral directors, EMS workers, or any other appropriate professionals who deal with this subject on a regular basis. Each semester, one or two students will find someone from the internet who lives in another state and who has a website. They will either use information from their website or in a rare instance actually contact them for an interview. This is not an appropriate person to interview. It must be someone within your local community, in other words someone who you can refer people directly to from your local community if they needed help. If you have a certain professional in mind but are unsure if he/she qualifies for this assignment, please contact me.
Instructions: Your task is to conduct an interview with a professional working in a death-related profession and to write a report of this interview. Discuss what you learned from this exercise and relate it to material covered in this course. ANSWERS ALREADY FILLED JUST NEED TO PUT INTO ESSAY
Interview questions and answered questions
) Full name and contact information of the interviewee (required)
De’Andrea Overton (347)263-0070
2) Their position and place of employment (required)
LPN Execu-search Agency (Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care.
3) Academic and professional background of interviewee.
Lpn – 6 years, BS in Biology, will be attending Accelerated BSN program Fall 2022 at Wagner College.
4) Reason why they chose their profession
– I chose nursing as a profession because everyday is different and you never know what to expect, its not boring and it keeps you on your toes. I first went to school for finance to become an actuary but working behind a computer all day, barely interacting with others was too boring. I knew I wouldn’t be happy doing that for years.
5) A detailed description of their role and responsibilities
– administering medications, providing ongoing wound care, documenting patient vital signs, ensuring patients are as pain-free and symptom-free as possible, assist with patient assessments and creating plan of care for patients
6) Common challenges they face in their work – Having to work with a shortage of staff (nurses and aides) and/or supplies, patients refusing care and/ or medications, being cursed at or physically attached by patients.
7) Any ethical dilemmas they have encountered – Having to treat patients that call you racial slurs or attempt to attack you.
8) Their views about dying, death, afterlife etc
Their views about dying, death, afterlife etc. I believe dying is much more than suffering. I see it as a time where those getting ready to pass can reach a different level of comfort and peace. Death doesn’t have to be a sad experience, it can bring family and friends closer together. I find comfort in believing there is an afterlife, which allows me to offer this comfort to my patients
9) What advice can they offer someone who is interested in a death-related profession – Go to therapy and find ways that help you to relieve stress. Being around death is not just hard on the patients’ families, it also takes a toll on you as well.
10) If there was something that they could change in their job, what would it be and why? I’d change having to witness patients slowly pass away before my eyes.
11) What was the last stressful situation you encountered in your job, and how did you react? Having a patient with an anxious daughter, who tried to control every aspect of care for the patient. The daughter didn’t want the changes to the medications from the hospital to be implemented. She was in denial her mom was being put into palliative care. I took the time to go over all the medications to help put the daughter at ease. We discussed the purpose for specific orders. I remained calm, attentive and reassuring. I didn’t rush and I have my full attention.
12) Tell me about a time that you had to deliver bad news to a patient?
13) Have you ever had a patient that took up a lot of your time? It’s not necessarily the patients that take up a lot of your time in hospice it’s typical the care you’re providing or a concerned family member that takes up a lot of my time.
14) How do you practice self-care? Yes, music soothes me so after a shift I listen to music on the way home. I have a spa day monthly and walk around my neighborhood. After a shift I also do yoga to help clear my mind.
15) How do you see the future of healthcare? If things remain the same, I see even more people leaving bedside care. There will be an even worse shortage of nurses and cnas.

Note: You are expected to come up with at least five other questions on your own. Your report should be in narrative/essay form. You can write down each question but make sure you follow it with a paragraph or two that paraphrases the person’s answer. And relate each response to the material covered in the course. Think of it as writing an interview article for a magazine not just a Q & A format.
Describe how biogeography (such as geologic structures, plate tectonics) or environmental factors such as climate, climate change, anthropogenic effects has impacted the speciation/ evolution your chosen group of organisms within an ecosystem(such as African cichlids in East Africa, Lemurs in Madagascar, isolated island endemics or other geologically isolated endemic group or species that you know of).
Bio-101: Spring 2022 (200 pts)
Essay Topic: Evolution, adaptation and biodiversity.
1. Select group of organisms (for example African cichlids, finches, wolves, lemurs, etc…., to construct a research essay. Note, also delimit your essay according to location. For example, will you be focusing on, say, organisms of coral reefs? Organisms in the Arctic? Organisms in the Mojave desert?
2. Describe some factors that have lead to the endangerment of that group within the context of biodiversity and/or human impact.
3. You may include how an invasive species has impacted the adaptation/ evolution of your group of choice, but be sure to relate effect of that invasive species has on and endemic endangeredspecies in you chosen ecosystem. e.g. In California estuaries, how the Red Fox has impacted the endangered Clapper Rail population in San Francisco Bay.
4. In your essay, describe for the group of organisms that you selected; how the group established itself (adaptations) for survival in that groups ecosystem (ex. small and tough leaves of desert plants, the use of metabolic water by Kangaroo rats in California)
Think about plants, microbes or pathogenic organisms (they evolve too) as well……. Not just not animals as a choice.
Include as much relevant biological information as necessary.
Devise a title that is informative.
General Considerations (‘rubric’ for grading’).
-In addition to the above, make sure you use (author-year) APA style citations.
-Writing must be clear, well structured and well edited.
-Research must be extensive, and use reputable scientific sources
-The presentation (writing of the paper) should be ‘professional’
-Word Length – c. 1500 minimum
Paper Due: Tuesday May 3rd at 11 :59 PM and turned in via canvas.
What resources does the SBA website provide to the entrepreneur (use the SBA website).
Assignment Steps:
Resource: The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) website is perhaps the most valuable resource for any new entrepreneur in America for all aspects of starting, operating, and growing a business, and it would help the students in this class to use it like a handbook. It is especially useful in learning more about financing a business and obtaining a loan.
Assess stages of financing in a minimum 1,200 words which includes the following:
How can the SBA website help with financing (use the SBA website).
What resources does the SBA website provide to the entrepreneur (use the SBA website).
Explain the different stages of financing (this is different than sources and life cycle). (Text and Web).
Analyze sources of financing through the life cycle of a firm. (Text lists sources, use Text and Web).
Assess the trade-offs between debt and equity financing for an entrepreneur. (Text and Web).
What question in the domain of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination would you like to pursue in more detail?
Your paper should focus on a topic in the domain of stereotyping, prejudice, and/or discrimination touched on in class. Which could include:
Social dominance orientation
Terror Management Theory
Hate Group
Ultimate Attribution Error
Self-fulfilling prophecy
Stereotype activation vs application
Symbolic prejudice
Aversive prejudice
Relative Deprivation
Integrated Threat Theory
What question in the domain of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination would you like to pursue in more detail? Imagine you are a writer working on a hard-hitting investigative report. Your job is to review and critically examine an important research question that we have not covered in the course or have only covered superficially. Realize that for many questions, there is no definitive “right” answer. Rather, I will be looking for how well you defend your position with empirical support.
Potential questions (Note: you can always come up with one of your own, but check with me first):
Which is more reliable when assessing a person’s true beliefs: implicit or explicit stereotypes?
Why are stereotypes so resistant to change?
Which form of contemporary prejudice is most dangerous and why?
How is benevolent prejudice problematic for society in general?
Do single-sex classes foster better learning in girls/women?
What impact does everyday sexism/racism have individuals?
What are long-term consequences of stereotype threat?
How can cross-group interactions be improved?
Is colorblindness the new modern racism or what society should strive for?
What are some specific ways to reduce prejudice in children?
Which prejudice reduction techniques work best for high-prejudiced people? for low?
Your overall thesis should be strong but concise enough for a 10-page paper
Use empirical psychology research and class material to defend your position
You should find and incorporate at least 5 primary empirical articles into this paper
What is a primary article? Primary research articles contain descriptions of research the authors did themselves. Review articles are not primary, but can be used to find primary research (check the references section).
Avoid talking me through the introduction section of another person’s article. I want to know about the research they did themselves and how that supports (or goes against) your thesis.
Summarize the major points/implications of your research
Formatting: 10 pages of written paper content, 12-pt Times New Roman, APA-style citations, APA-style title page & references page (these do not count toward your 10-page limit), double-spaced, 1-inch margins, [NO ABSTRACT NECESSARY}
Be sure to appropriately cite research references. Aim to cite a source at least once per paragraph as a general rule.
Avoid direct quotes. Strive to put everything you research into your own words. Direct quotes are rare in empirical research (even in review articles) and should be rare (or better, nonexistent) here.
Final Paper on Mental Health Policy Analysis
What
Dynamics and Patterns of U.S. Social Policy are Evident in the Policy (from
class lectures/activities)?
Provide a concise conclusion of your findings related to the Policy.
Creative Archetype Assignment
Select ONE of the following prompts. Be sure to follow the directions.
Prompt 1: Short Story
Create a short story using all you have learned so far in the unit. Include archetypes, literary elements, figurative language, and academic vocabulary words you learned in the course to shape your story. What is the setting, plot, characters, etc. How will you use figurative language such as metaphor and alliteration? What type of characters will you include? Ensure that you also demonstrate a clear point-of-view such as omniscient, limited omniscient, third-person, narrative, or first person, within your story.

Be sure to also use paragraph formatting, with the first line of each paragraph being indented.
Prompt 2: Literary Service Announcement (LSA) Assignment
You have had a relationship with archetypes since a young age—Carl Jung might argue this is true since your conception. In fact, many movies and sitcoms use archetypes as part of their humor (think of the hero in “Spiderman,” or the villainous Joker in “Batman”). Throughout this unit, you have identified common archetypes across ancient and modern texts and visuals.
Choose the ONE archetype you most relate to, recognize, and/or like.
Create a public service announcement that educates your audience on the role of the archetype as well as persuades them that your archetype is one of the greatest—most common, most powerful, most dynamic (changes the most), most unique, etc.
The guidelines for the LSA are below.
I look forward to your LSA! Be as creative as you want!
Guidelines
In your LSA you should…
Educate
inform the reader of the common uses of the archetype.
give examples.
include content that is developed and shows mature thought.
ensure ideas are organized strategically.
ensure grammar and spelling are polished.
Persuade
ensure word choice is purposeful.
ensure rhetoric is used effectively.
ensure presentation is geared towards audience.
ensure excellent use of creativity in some form to sell your archetype.

Pay attention to Length
Videos must be 30 seconds long. Can go up to 1:00. No longer than 1:00. Include words/captions.
Power points must be 8-10 slides (not including the title and reference slides)–with main points bulletted on each slide, and 25-50 words per slide.
Typical and Atypical Student Development Matrix
Assessment Description
Educators should understand the learning and behavioral characteristics of students with moderate to severe disabilities when providing direct services and supports within the school setting. In turn, teachers can use such knowledge to collaborate with general educators and other professional colleagues when planning meaningful learning activities and social interactions with peers and adults. Expected student progress is made more viable when the selection, development, and adaptation of learning experiences for individuals with moderate to severe disabilities consider individual abilities and other related factors.
Create a matrix to compare and contrast the typical and atypical cognitive, linguistic, and social-emotional development of K-8 students without disabilities, with dyslexia, with mild disabilities, and those with moderate to severe disabilities. Include 3-5 characteristics per student disability type and developmental criteria.
Additionally, write a 250-500 word summary in which you:
Explain how understanding typical and atypical development of K-8 students can be used by all educators to respond to the learning and behavioral needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities.
Explain how collaboration between special educators, general educators, and related service providers regarding learning and behavioral characteristics of students can help create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments that engage students with disabilities in meaningful learning activities and social interactions.
Support your matrix and summary with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
