Unit 8: Star Observations
During this course, you will move through two seasons, and with this being an online course you will also find that your classmates live in many different areas of the world “north and south of the equator”. One night during each unit you will go outside (use the same specific location for each observation) and look at the night sky and describe the stars that you can see at your zenith. You will prepare a brief discussion post discussing the star groups that you were able to see during your night observations. Also, discuss the challenges you experienced in being able to see the stars. Be sure to provide your “general location” (north, south, east, west within a particular state, country) (NOT YOUR ADDRESS), and the date and time of your observation at the top of your discussion. The link below will help you identify the star groups. Make sure you select the correct star map for your area and season. You can also use SkySafariPro on your cell phones to help identify the star groups. Information on downloading the SkySafariPro is in the Getting Started Module at the top of the Home Page.

For the Paper:
This unit focuses on creating a brief methodology section for your research paper.
You can choose between Qualitative or Quantitative Methods.
Explain why you chose the specific methodology.
Be sure to include your thesis at the top of the page. [I attach my research paper below, it includes the thesis. However, my instructor said that the thesis was not strong enough. Could you please rewrite it if possible?]
If you choose Quantitative,
You will then write a short questionnaire to give to 10 people.
At this point, all you need to hand in are your questions.
You should aim for a list of 5-10 questions that focus on your thesis area.
If you choose Qualitative,
You will write a paragraph describing what and how you want to observe in order to discover more about your thesis.
For example, you can write a proposal for an experiment that includes just observing people at work or school and writing down your observations.
Just remember, it has to be focused on your own research paper thesis.
Please note, for either method you choose, you will have to write a small (2-3 paragraph) results section for the next unit for your research paper, so keep this in mind when you choose your method.
Your instructor will use the following rubric to grade your Learning Journal:
Aspect 1: Did the student clearly pick a methodology?
Aspect 2: How well did the student exhibit the choice of methodology?
Aspect 3: Is this method of research realistic for the student to accomplish? If not, then what advice can you give?
Aspect 4: Is this a work of original thought? Has the student grasped what the direction the research should take in order to explore the thesis?
Aspect 5: How free of spelling and grammar issues is the methodology section? Are there repeating errors that can be pointed out?

Be sure to use in-text citation and provide references for your sources, including textbooks.

Instructions:
For the Final Exam, you must complete one of the following two options:

1. Interview or Self-Assessment
Please interview a young adult (ages 18-25), or assess yourself as a young adult, using the following questions as a guide:
What has been your greatest challenge during this stage of your life?
What is the extent of your parents’ influence on your decision-making?
Do you live at home with your parents? If so, what are their expectations of you while you live at home? How much do you contribute toward housekeeping chores, cooking, shopping, errands, and the care of younger siblings? In your current living situation, what is expected of you at this age? What advice would you give to an adolescent before they enter young adulthood?
2. Choosing a Career
Please identify and write about the reasons you have chosen a particular career path. Identify the different motivations leading up to your career choice.
To help you identify your motivations, you may want to include different things you remember from your childhood that may have influenced your chosen career path, your parents’ and/or siblings and extended family influence, and/or a specific event that influenced you so much you knew at that moment what you wanted to “be when you grew up.” You might also want to include certain personality or character traits that you possess that may have influenced your decision (e.g., “I am outgoing so I knew I would do well interacting with others on a daily basis as a nurse.”

In the handout entitled “Using Smart and Williams to Critique Mabbott,” in the context of an example I provided, I claim the following.
“If the judge (and the public) knew that the institutions of criminal justice, its legal structure, and particular criminal laws were created on utilitarian grounds, she would be more likely to deviate from the impartial application of the law as written in cases like Jones’, i.e., case where strict application of the law would produce a significantly counter-utilitarian result. More precisely, I suggest that she would be more likely to deviate from a strict application of the law in a real-world criminal justice system where Mabbott’s theory had been implemented than she would be in a somewhat mixed or jumbled system like our own or in one where the legal institutions and criminal laws were known to have been founded on some principle of retributivism (perhaps the version that is based on the idea that those who violated the criminal law morally deserve to be punished for their wrongdoing).”
As I say in that handout, these claims are empirical conjecture “about what judges would do given human psychology.” In this regard, “I have said nothing … about what judges shouldideally do. I have merely suggested what they would, as a matter of fact, be likely to do.” From there, I develop a criticism of Mabbott’s theory based on the assumption that these empirical claims are plausible enough to be worth assuming for the sake of examining their implications.
For this discussion, my question to you is the following. Do the empirical claims that I make in the italicized quotation above seem plausible or even likely to be true, or do you think the contrary? Again, for this question, you are not saying what judges should do, just what (based on your understanding of human psychology) judges would actually be likely to do. Please explain the basis of your answer.
I am not looking for a “correct” answer. I am looking for intelligent, careful reflection and clarity and care in expressing yourself.

Please reflect on the following in your journal. Stephen Covey’s habit Win-Win is a frame of mind that seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. It encourages us to have consideration and consider other people’s wins as well as our own. We are conditioned to put people in categories. If we can break ourselves of that habit, we can open ourselves up to the possibilities of mutual benefit through a balance of empathy and courage.

How does the habit Win-Win, along with the concepts of inclusivity and diversity, help to grow an organization and help you to increase your growth mindset?

sometimes elements/remnants of folk culture can be found by using the words
“traditions, traditional culture, local culture, etc.” You’ll have to
decide if what you find reflects folk culture in one way or another.
