Rethinking Motivation

This discussion is based on a TED Talk by Dan Pink, as well as drawing on readings from the Motivation module. Pink, a former speechwriter, career analyst, and author of the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, reveals some remarkable facts about motivation that have been confirmed in many social science experiments, but aren’t widely recognized. Pink argues that the way we’re motivating people is all wrong, and he proposes a new model to replace traditional incentives. https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pink_on_motivation/transcript
For Discussion
Please respond to both of the following questions in your initial post.
Did you find Pink’s talk surprising? Why or why not?
Pink concludes:
There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. Here is what science knows. One: Those 20th century rewards, those motivators we think are a natural part of business, do work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances. Two: Those if-then rewards often destroy creativity. Three: The secret to high performance isn’t rewards and punishments, but that unseen intrinsic drive–the drive to do things for their own sake. The drive to do things cause they matter.
How do you think managers can use this knowledge to motivate their employees? How will you use this knowledge in your own pursuits?

YOUR ASSIGNMENT
The collaborative project (with 3 or 4 team members; you will form your teams) offers you a variety of real-world writing scenarios (e.g., a proposal to build a restaurant; identify a problem and propose a solution for a small, local, privately owned business, etc.). You will select your topic from the list provided in Blackboard.
The project requires primary (a questionnaire) and secondary (library, Web) research, and appropriate documentation (use APA documentation style – review a source such as Purdue Online Writing Lab: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html). Your team must use (and cite) at least five secondary sources, cited using APA style. The body of the report, not counting the prefatory and supplemental material, must be a minimum of 3 pages per team member. The written content in the report body, not counting visuals and headings, must have a minimum of 2000 words (2700 words for a 4-person team).
Each team member must show their work individually on the team’s wiki page to receive credit for the assignment. Failure to use the team wiki page will result in a zero.
NOTE: Wikipedia is NOT a valid scholarly source; its use will result in an automatic zero. NOTE: Plagiarism will result in an automatic zero.

The 50/50 Raffle Goes Digital

There will be four case studies due throughout the semester. The chapters the case studies can be found in are on the
syllabus. Students are expected to respond to all prompts and questions following the case study. Students are also
encouraged to use supplemental outside materials to support their responses. An example of how a case study should
be completed will be uploaded to Blackboard for students’ review. Case studies will be broken into two parts: Summary
of the Case Study and Discussion/Question responses.

Art Experience for Drama

Write a thoughtful essay, 2-3 pages in length, double spaced using 12 point font and 1” margins
on all sides. Your paper should be clearly organized, largely free of grammatical and syntactical
errors, and supported by numerous specific examples from the production you attended. You
MUST provide proof of attendance in the form of a receipt, ticket, program book, pictures
of you at the event in the lobby, by the stage, next to a work of art, getting a performer’s
autograph, etc. Paste pictures into the Microsoft Word document review.

Introduction
 Begin by stating the title of the play (in italics), the playwright’s full name, the date of
the performance and the location of the production.
 Describe the audience and yourself as a member of the audience. How did the audience
respond to the play?
 Create a thesis and support it using specific examples from the play.
Body Paragraphs: In the body paragraphs, discuss the areas below that best fit the play that you
see. Choose at least one from each category.

Category I: Perspective
These five perspectives (social, personal, artistic, theatrical, and entertainment) help us view and
judge plays.
 the play’s social significance
 its human or personal significance
 its artistic quality
 its theatrical expression
 its capacity to entertain.

Category II: Production Values
Consider each of the following elements
 acting
 costumes
 scenery
 lighting
 sound and music
 directing
 makeup.
How do these parts impact the perspective you are emphasizing?

Category III: Connections
What insights did you gain about the time in history or mythology depicted in the play? Do any
of the values or beliefs depicted by the characters in the play connect to the values and beliefs of
the artists we have studied in this Humanities class? How does that explain/connect to human
culture? Give specific examples from the text.
Conclusion: Briefly summarize your main ideas and end with a thoughtful insight that pulls the
essay together.
