The Balance of Power in the American Government
Learning Objective: Through intensive critical thinking and analysis of Articles I, I, and III of the U.S. Constitution, students learn how the balance of powers works in a republican form of government.

Genre. Consider the type of publication you have and decide if it is
primary literature, secondary literature, or social media. What is the genre?
What are the implications of the genre for how you approach the material?
What do you or do you not expect to find in the material based on its
genre? How does your confidence in what the authors say change based on
just the genre of the article?
3. Relationship to Text – Context. Who are the authors and contributors
to the materials? What are their qualifications? Based on the qualifications
of the authors, what are your expectations? Think about whether the
authors may be biased given what you are able to learn about them. Who
is the intended audience?
4. Analysis. How is this text organized to serve its purpose? Are there
direct data sources such as figures and numbers used? Is there secondhand
knowledge such as someone describing results rather than showing
results? What are some of the arguments used to support the theses
presented? How are the theses supported?
5. Reader’s Voice. As you discuss the materials presented to you, what are
some questions you want your audience to think about as they read your
paper and as they read this research summary? How would you go about
engaging your audience in this topic? What are some questions vou could
ask about the societal and ethical implications of what you learned from
reading these materials.
Here are the rhetorical devices I want vou to analvze in each
assignment and use in your final paper:
Logos: The rhetorical appeal to the reader’s sense of reason or logic. The
author makes clear and logical connections between ideas using data and
facts or may show the logic through historical and literal analogies. It is
free of logical fallacies such as ad hominem, non-sequitur, or appeals to
ignorance.
Ethos: The rhetorical appeal whereby the author builds their credibility or
authority. This becomes apparent through the writer’s mastery of language,
use of verifiable sources, and an understanding of the counterarguments to
their thesis. Ethos is also apparent through the writer’s personal experience
and credentials
Pathos: The rhetorical appeal to the reader’s emotions whereby the writer
tries to persuade the reader to feel certain emotions through word choice
and/or provocative language which is meant to elicit anger, frustration,
sympathy, even humor.
Tone: Tone is the author’s attitude toward their subject and it is conveyed
through word use, figurative language, imagery, diction, and details. Tone
can be sentimental, arrogant, distant, or humorous.

Taj Hotels: Building sustainable livelihoods, IVEY HBS. Taj Hotels is part of one of India’s largest commercial enterprises, the Tata Group that includes luxury hotels around the world. In India, the hotels have embarked on an ambitious corporate sustainability (CS) endeavor. First, what are these CS activities and how do they work?
