Topic for Paper 2: Metaethics
The readings on the syllabus for Phil 115 include discussions of a number of issues in metaethics:
relativism; the fact/value problem; non-naturalism and naturalistic responses (including sociobiology); the
challenge of non-cognitivist theories including emotivism, subjectivism, and nihilism; and the puzzle of
egoism.
In this paper, you should defend a thesis about metaethics (and demonstrate understanding of course
content = explain and evaluate authors and ideas) by considering a few of the following questions:
 Is relativism true or is there a non-relative (objective) morality?
 Are ethical statements true or false (and in what sense)? Or do you agree with the moral nihilists
and/or other non-cognitivists (and to what extent)?
 Is egoism true (and to what extent)? Can people operate form non-selfish motives (and how
would we know)?
 What can we learn (if anything) about ethics from descriptive claims about biology, brains,
institutions, emotions, conventions, agreements, the law, etc.?

Colonist in 1776

One of the various ways to understand a primary source is by placing yourself in that document’s time. So for this particular assignment, I want you to put yourself in the mindset of the early months of 1776. Try to set aside anything you might know about what came after — like the Declaration of Independence, the war, and the very existence of the United States of America. Instead, imagine yourself as a colonist reading these two documents, or hearing them read in a tavern, and reacting to them. And then write an essay of about two pages, in which you respond. Are you convinced by the arguments from one of the authors? Are you developing a strong set of opinions either for or against independence? What arguments are the most compelling to you?
You’re encouraged to be creative in doing this. Are you writing from the point of view of a large landowner? Or a poor laborer? Or a woman? Or a Black person, free or enslaved? Where would your particular interests lie? You can imagine yourself as another pamphleteer entering the public debate, or arguing in the pub, or even making a speech in the Continental Congress.
As you can see, I’m giving you a lot of latitude to do this in your own way. Make it your own and be creative. But along the way I do want you to:
— use quotes from both documents
— bring in some context about the time period, from the textbook or other course materials
— come to a conclusion: do you favor independence, or should the colonies remain British? How do you argue your case?

Databases

Create SQL statements (In SQL Fiddle this will be on the left hand input panel) that will create all tables in the given schema. Save the statements in a file named (yourname_create_hw.sql) Choose appropriate data types. Implement all the needed constraints. Use ON DELETE,
PRIMARY KEY, FOREIGN KEY, NOT NULL, etc. where they are required. PK and FK constraints must be named. All the
attribute names should be same as the shown schema. For date, use Timestamp data type. For min constraints see
Homework 2 ER/EER diagram.
yourname_drop_hw.sql This file will include drop statements to drop all tables in the appropriate order
yourname_delete_hw.sql This file will include delete statements to delete all the tuples from the database in the
appropriate order.
yourname_insert_hw.sql This file will include insert statements to populate the database with made up values. Make
sure to have 5 or more tuples in each table and the correct order.
yourname_select_hw.sql This file will include select statements to display all the tuples using “select * from table
name” format for each table.
