Geography/ COVID

GEOG 151 Real World Application Activity One:
Examining the Covid-19 Pandemic at Different Scales

“The twenty-first century has brought the end of geography.” This argument has occasionally appeared in the popular media over the past few decades. The argument goes something like this:

Advanced transportation and logistics systems move products ever more rapidly across the earth’s surface. Almost anyone in the world is now just a high-speed internet connection away. Overnight shipping and social media have made distance obsolete. Furthermore, it is argued that global corporate marketing machines are quickly homogenizing consumer tastes. Shopping streetscapes are being standardized. You can now find the same fast food restaurants and retail chain stores across the world. Everywhere is becoming the same. Geography is dead.

Geographers vehemently reject this argument . . . because everywhere is not becoming the same! Geography (as location, as territory, as place) makes a difference in how all sorts of social, cultural, economic, and political processes play out! Geography is certainly not dead!

The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic of 2020 (and 2021) provides a poignant example of the importance of geography. Geography has been front and center in the pandemic. Its spread involves the simplest of geographic concepts: distance. Efforts to slow and stop the spread of the virus have varied across space, with different territorial jurisdictions taking different approaches. And the consequences of the pandemic (infection rates, death tolls, economic slowdowns) have varied place to place. The importance of geography is evident even in the rollout and distribution of the vaccines . . . and in the phenomenon of ‘vaccine hesitancy’.

As we learned in Chapter 1 / Assignment 1, geographic scale is a central concept in Geography. Geographic scale – also called spatial scale – refers to the areal extent of space under examination. I’d like you to write a short two-page paper about the Covid-19 pandemic that uses geographic scale as its organizing framework! You will write about the pandemic at four different scales – at four different areal extents of space! You will start at a very small scale of analysis – the personal scale of our bodies – and then ‘zoom out’ from there!

I don’t want you to fret about how to organize your paper. Four paragraphs will suffice:

First Paragraph: Start with discussing the coronavirus at the personal scale – at the areal extent of our individual bodies. How has personal space changed during the pandemic? How have you handled social distancing? Any situations (with strangers . . . or family) that made you uncomfortable during the pandemic? Personal space involves personal experience . . . so I’m leaving this wide open!

Second Paragraph: Discuss changes that the coronavirus brought at the community scale – at the areal extent of individual neighborhoods/towns/cities. Did it become a ‘ghost town’ in your community during the height of the pandemic in 2020? How much of an impression did that make on you? Did businesses in your community suffer? Did any permanently go out of business? And how did your community deal with mask mandates? Did mask-wearing become the norm in your community?

Third Paragraph: Discuss how the pandemic has played out at the national scale – at the areal extent of individual countries. The virus has been more devastating in some countries than in others. Which countries have been most successful at fighting the virus? What are some reasons why they were successful? Where does the United States stand? If you haven’t kept up with the news, this may require some research!!!

Fourth Paragraph: This epidemic quickly turned into a full-blown pandemic. Discuss the impact of the coronavirus at the global scale. How was the original virus able to spread across the world so quickly? If another variant of the virus emerges, do you think it would spread across the world just as quickly?

What to submit?

Worldview Research Paper Assignment

Worldview Research Paper Assignment Overview
This assignment is
designed to help you understand the term worldview, and how important it is to
have a consistent, coherent, and adequate worldview as you interact with
others. Everyone has a worldview, though none of us have a perfectly consistent
worldview, especially in how we apply it to our decision-making. There are five
worldview questions that can help you know your own worldview and the
worldviews of others. The Biblical Worldview uses the Bible to help answer
these questions (2 Timothy 3:16). However, it is one thing to know how the
Biblical Worldview would answer a question, and quite another to use that
worldview to answer practical, contemporary, questions (2 Timothy 3:17; 1
Corinthians 10:31).

For this assignment you are to define the term worldview (75 – 100
words), answer the five worldview questions from a Biblical Worldview (400 – 500
words), and apply that Biblical Worldview to two of four practical questions
from a list of options (100 – 150 words). You are writing a research paper, so
this assignment should be written in paragraph format. Headers may be used to
introduce each part.

· Cover page
– This is the first page to be included in your paper. (This should be
formatted according to the style (APA, MLA, Turabian) that you will be using
for this assignment. See the sample paper in the Writing Style Guide link for
formatting instructions). If you are using APA, an Abstract is not required.
· Content pages
– These pages will contain your content and fulfill the requirements as listed
below.
Note: Add the word count after each part.
Part 1 (75 – 100 words) What is a worldview? Define what the term
“worldview” means. Use descriptive phrases to support your definition. Use and
cite content from at least one or two sources in this part to define the term.
Part 2 (400 – 500 words) Articulate the biblical worldview’s answer (what is
believed) for each of the following five questions*. Support your biblical
content with scripture (Bible references). A minimum of two relevant biblical
references needs to be used to support the content for each of the five questions
below. Do not write out the verses as it takes up too much of your word count.
Just state the biblical idea and cite the biblical text to support it. Use the
Writing Style Guide sample paper for how to cite scripture. Each of the five
questions must be answered in a separate paragraph.
The Question of Origin – (What is the origin of the universe etc.? How did
humanity come into existence?)
The Question of Identity – (What does it mean to be
human? Are humans more important than other living things?)
The Question of Meaning/Purpose – (What is humanity’s
purpose?)
The Question of Morality – (What is meant by right
and wrong? How is morality determined?)
The Question of Destiny – (What happens when a person
dies?)

*An overview of these specific worldview questions can
be found in chapter 4 of Finding Your Worldview: Thinking Christianly about
the World.
Part 3 (100 – 150
words) Choose two of the following questions below and answer them from a
biblical worldview belief system. (Use and cite scripture to support your
biblical content.)
How might/should a
biblical worldview
influence the way you…
1.
…think
about and treat a person who doesn’t hold your beliefs?
2.
…vote
in local or national elections?
3.
…act
toward a family member who is hard to get along with and is unkind?
4.
…decide
what to do when asked to do something unethical at work?

·
Bibliography/References/Works Cited page
a.
In
addition to the in-text citations, a Bibliography/Reference or Works Cited page
must be included.
b.
A
minimum of three different sources must be used and cited in the body of your
paper and added here.

1. Use academic
sources for your paper. (For example, do not include blogs, social media,
opinion pages, or Wikipedia.)

2. At least one of
the sources must be outside of the materials used in this course (this would
include the Bible, any required reading or videos, and the required textbooks).
c.

Movie Poster

“A motion picture, then, is always a cooperative effort, a joint creative interaction of many artists and technicians working on diverse elements, all of which contribute to the finished film. Because of the technical and physical complexity of filmmaking and the large number of people involved, it might seem misleading to talk of any single individual’s style. The director, however, generally serves as the unifying force and makes the majority of the creative decisions, so it is perhaps proper to equate the film’s style with the director’s style.” (Petrie and Boggs in The Art of Watching Films)
Take a still/screen picture of a scene/moment of Roma (2018) that you think visually and effectively expresses the cinematic experience of the film, highlighting Alfonso Cuarón’s work. Add the image to your post AND explain the choice of this image. Support your ideas addressing the film elements and the collaborators involved in this film process, AND the film’s relevance in social, political, and economic, as well as artistic contexts.
In this post, the students ought to develop on the topic proposed by showing knowledge and familiarity with the course materials, the ability to discuss and analyze such content, and demonstrating an appreciation of the film experience. The post has a minimum of 300 words.
