The consequences of the impacts of trauma are far reaching and can have significant negative effects. Intimate partner violence puts people at risk for short- and long-term problems related to their physical, psychological, and social well-being. Researchers fo‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌und that one in four women and one in ten men experience at least one of these impacts of violence: a need for medical care, injury, or post-traumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms (Miller and McCaw, 2019). Researchers found that, among women who are of reproductive age, domestic violence has been linked with poor sexual and reproductive health, including human immunodeficiency virus infection and sexually transmitted infections (McGarry et al., 2010) Eventually, domestic abuse could lead to chronic stress, which can increase negative behavioral coping strategies, such as smoking and other substance use, that contribute to poor health (Miller and McCaw, 2019)‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌.
