ENGLISH 1302 RESEARCH PROJECT
A 12-Step Process for A Painless Research Paper
Using MLA documentation style, you will write a 2000-word minimum (2500-word maximum) paper using one of the following short stories found in Portable Literature, 9th ed.
“A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty
“How to Talk to Girls” by Neil Gaiman
“Barn Burning” by William Faulkner
“A&P” by John Updike
“The Storm” by Kate Chopin
“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor
“Everyday Use” by Alice Walker
NOTE: You may NOT recycle a previous essay (or topic). You should pick a story and topic that you have not written about.
The paper must be based on your own original thesis and must include references to five (5) secondary sources. THESE SOURCES MUST COME FROM THE TJC DATABASES. NO INTERNET SOURCES WILL BE ACCEPTED. (See link above for data base instructions).
It is suggested that you work through each of the following steps in order to complete a successful research paper.
Step 1: Prepare
List the major elements of short fiction which we have discussed: plot, character, foreshadowing, setting, point of view, symbolism, style and theme. Write a brief description of each element as it pertains to one or two of your favorite stories. During this process, you will probably home in on one element in one story that seems to stand out to you. Brainstorm, jot down ideas, and choose something interesting to you which has possibilities for a detailed analysis.
Step 2: Select
Choose one story; reread it carefully two or three times.
Make notes as you read.
Look for a focus.
Step 3: Analyze
Write a sentence expressing your interpretation of the theme of the story. You cannot proceed until you have an understanding of what the author is trying to tell us about human nature.
Step 4: Focus
Write a tentative thesis statement. This should include the title of the story and the author’s name. It should also include the one element which you will focus on in your analysis and it should relate that element to the theme of the story.
Here is an example of a good thesis from an analysis of a well-known short story:
In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson uses simple objects—a box, some stones, some slips of paper—to symbolize the narrow-mindedness and brutality that result from superstitious thinking.
The element to be examined is the symbolism of objects. The theme is the danger of superstitious thinking.
Step 5: Research.
Begin the hunt for five required secondary sources. Secondary sources are written about the primary source (the short story). You may go to the library and search the indexes by story title. Ask a librarian to direct you.
Another source is the collection of online databases provided by the TJC library on the TJC website for all TJC students.
The best sources are literary journals. No internet sources will be accepted. No Wikepedia or Sparknotes.
When you have found secondary sources, read and study them carefully and select at least five usable ones.
Step 6: Make source citations
Prepare a citation for each of the sources you plan to use. Consult the textbook or website for proper MLA form. Write each citation as it will appear on your Works Cited page. You should have a total of six sources, five secondary sources and one primary source. Arrange them in alphabetical order for your Works Cited page.
Step 7: Read
Read through your secondary sources and mark important passages. Consider jotting notes in the margins and using symbols to draw your attention to certain ideas. Highlight only the portions of each source which you are interested in quoting or paraphrasing in your paper.
Step 8: Plan and organize
If your tentative thesis still applies, write a rough sentence outline combining your own thoughts with those from the outside sources. If needed, revise the original thesis statement before writing.
Step 9: Works Cited
Prepare your Works Cited page. The title Works Cited should be centered on the top line. List the sources in alphabetical order. Remember to use a hanging indent. Consult MLA link for detailed instructions.
Step 10: Start writing
Begin writing the first draft of the paper.
Try writing the introduction first. It should begin with an interesting lead-in and move smoothly to your thesis statement. It may end with an essay map or forecasting statement briefly naming the main points to be covered in the body of your paper. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence (follow your tentative plan), and each paragraph should follow through on the idea in the topic sentence. When you include any borrowed information, use the MLA in-text citation system. The conclusion should be strong and should refer to both the lead in and the thesis in the introduction.
When you have finished the rough drafting phase of the paper, remember to let it rest for a while, at least 24 hours. Review the concept of plagiarism before you begin any revision. See Chapter 3: Documenting Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism, beginning on page 49.
Step 11: Revise
Check for coherence (smooth flow of ideas in an understandable sequence).
Check for unity (single focus of all material within each paragraph). Cut any unnecessary or irrelevant information.
Make sure each quote blends in to the flow of ideas.
Eliminate all material that does not support the thesis statement.
Use the Using Materials page above as a checklist for MLA form.
Check for grammatical and mechanical rules.
Tip: Read the final draft aloud and listen for a smooth flow.

Step 12: Presentation
Submit your final paper as one document in the following order:

2-3 Short Paper: Organizational Change
Assignment
What does the term managing organizational change mean to you? Is it possible to not have change in an organization? Is change best driven by the leadership or is change more effective in a grass roots movement. Should change be resisted at all costs? Is change a good or a bad thing? Discuss, substantiating your position with the research that you have collected.

As we have studied during this week, transformational leaders
encourage their employees to share ideas. This type of leader motivates
employees and seeks collaboration to achieve goals. They take the time to
listen to employees and evaluate ideas. Open communication, cooperation, and
risk-taking are characteristics that often describe transformational leaders.
When COVID-19 began, Salam, the general manager of XYZ’s chain
restaurant, conducted a meeting with all employees. During the meeting, Salam
shared COVID-19 related information and expressed the critical importance of
customer safety.
As a transformational leader, Salam wanted to involve all
employees in the decision-making process to determine if masks and gloves
should be used by employees, the number of customers to be served inside the
restaurant at one period of time, how sanitation efforts could be encouraged,
and more. Since the transformational leadership approach was used, the process
of determining what was best for the organization took countless meetings and
over one month to agree upon. While waiting to make a final decision, employees
became ill with COVID-19 and the restaurant needed to close for longer than
anticipated.
Thinking about the case presented above:
Determine if the transformational leadership style was
the best approach to use.
Explain what leadership approach you would have used if
you were in Salam’s position (i.e., transactional leadership, charismatic
leadership, or transformational leadership).
Explain the advantages and disadvantages with using the
transactional leadership approach as compared to the transformational
leadership approach.
If you were Salam, what would you have done differently
and why.
Your well-written paper should meet the following
requirements:

Your life is comprised of several short stories. Each story has built up who you are to date. As discussed extensively in this course, a story can be told in several different ways. This Transfer Assignment will ask you to tell a single story of your life as a narrative. You will then compile the raw data within your piece and transfer the information to another type of writing, being the expository (informative) news article.
TASK
Recount the most memorable situation you lived through in your many years of schooling (ex. prom, problem with a teacher, school fight, first love etc.).
Part 1 – Proposal (10%)
Write a double-spaced proposal (minimum ½ page, maximum 1 page) that briefly outlines what life situation you chose to write about (1-3 sentences). Explain the significance of this situation within your life without giving your whole story away. How did it challenge you? How did you grow from it? (2-4 sentences). Explain the difference in GAPS (genre, audience, purpose, style) you might have after changing the Genre from narrative to expository news article (make a small chart like the one below.)

Part 2 – Narrative (10%)
Tell the story of the most memorable situation you lived through at school. The story could be about your first high school dance, a fight or scuffle you had with a teacher or student, your first love or your first heartbreak, a trip to the principal’s office etc. In a first-person point of view, tell me of the sights, the smells, the physical sensations, the thoughts running through your mind etc. Go heavy on details. You are encouraged to use dialogue (quotations) when appropriate. Remember the unspoken rule on feelings: show, don’t tell.
Important notes to consider
1. Don’t start with a line like “The most memorable day…” Instead, immerse the reader into the story right away by detailing the first action you performed, or describing the sensual details (what you see, hear, touch, taste etc.) in a particular moment.
2. Don’t tell me what you learned in the situation or why the situation was important in your life. Just tell the story.
3. Have a specific title! Your narrative assignment should not be titled “Narrative Assignment”. You need a title for your story.
Part 3 – Expository News Article (10%)
Transfer the raw data of the narrative portion of this assignment into an expository news article. The story should be told in a third person point of view. You need to focus on objective facts. No opinions of the author are allowed, but you may use quotations from “bystanders” to give a clearer picture of the scene. Make sure to only give details that you find would be necessary that would strengthen your piece. (Between 1/2 page – 1 page)

For this assignment, you are to analyze a current news article about a topic or concept related to or directly discussed in the realm of this course (from a reputable source, this includes, newspapers, online news, magazines, etc.) in sociological terms. Find a story that intrigues you about an issue pertaining to our class discussions and/or readings. Critically analyze the article using the concepts we’ve discussed in class. Be sure to discuss how the article frames the issue. Although the first part asks for a brief summary of ‘the facts’ this is the least important part of the assignment. The most important part is the questions that follow! Do not forget to answer all of the questions for full credit and answer them with knowledge gained from this course(you need to demonstrate your understanding and application of course material).
Identify the following basic information from the article to place in the summary:
Who is involved?
What happened?
Why did it happen?
Where did it occur?
When did it occur?
What issue(s) are being addressed?
Throughout the body of your paper be sure to thoroughly answer the following questions:
How can the issue in question be explained using our course concepts?
How (if) could this issue be resolved in this situation?
Be sure to clearly state how the groups or people involved are invested in the problem (either in resolving it or perpetuating it).
Was this incident an isolated case or is this an example of a larger issue? Explain.
Be sure to apply a sociological theory (select one theory-conflict, structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism- to explain the issue in combination with any applicable key concepts or terms) correctly!
Finally, how is the topic framed in the news source? Why? What impression does the reader get? (look at the phrasing, tone of the story, word choices by the outlet, etc.) Is the author balanced or biased? Explain
Required Paper Format
This is a minimum of three full-page, double-spaced, Times New Roman size 12 font, one-inch margin paper. Citations should be in ASA, MLA, Chicago or similar format for the article and any course material that you utilize in your explanation. You should have a work cited/reference page for the article and if you include any direct reference to other sources you should include those references as well.
Structure of your paper
Your paper should be presented as an essay with separate paragraphs (not a bullet point list) and should be free of major spelling and grammar errors. Below is a reminder of the general layout of your paper.
The first part of your paper should be an introduction to the topic or issue that you will be discussing. The introduction should be about a third of a page in length and is where you state the purpose of your paper for the reader. Your thesis statement will usually be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph.
The main portions or the body of the paper should focus on explaining those main points and on answering the questions I have asked you to elaborate on.
The last part of your paper should be the conclusion. This is the time to recap your ideas, thoughts or ways of preventing/dealing with the issue. Go back and read your paper and make sure any point you might have brought up has been resolved, discussed, or critically questioned.
