Thesis Statement: Individuals can overcome insomnia at home by using six significant steps; waking up at the same time daily, restraining from alcohol and other stimulants entailing caffeine and nicotine, and exercising regularly.
Waking up at the same time every day of the week helps individuals maintain a regular sleeping pattern overcoming insomnia.
a. Most individuals are tempted to oversleep during the weekends, especially if they had a poor sleep during the weekdays; however, this is more likely to disrupt their sleeping pattern encouraging insomnia.
b. According to Bootzin (2016), individuals who have insomnia should wake up at the same time daily, regardless of weekends, to train their bodies to have a sleeping pattern.
c. Avoiding alcohol and stimulants with caffeine and nicotine lowers an individual’s chances of having insomnia.
Chaudhary (2016) explains that caffeine’s impacts on the body can last for several hours (even a full day), thus having high chances of impacting an individual’s sleeping pattern.
a. Caffeine causes frequent awakenings and difficulty initiating sleep.
b. Similarly, even though alcohol may have a sedative impact, it can also result in a non-restful night’s sleep and frequent arousals.
c. Individuals with insomnia and under-prescribed stimulant medications such as asthma inhalers and decongestants should seek doctor’s advice on the best time to take them to help reduce any impact on sleep.
3. Regularly exercising is significantly associated with lower chances of having insomnia.
a. According to Youngstedt (2021), regular exercise can profoundly enhance sleep duration and quality.
b. However, individuals should avoid exercising immediately before going to bed since it results in a stimulant-like effect.
