Research: This essay will not require intense research, but make sure you bring at least three perspectives to bear, and plan to cite at least three sources. These can include materials from our classwork, or chapters in our books that we have not used. You also can use a journal, or even business publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc

Essay #1 – Short Story
During the first part of the semester, we have read eight short stories: “Eveline,” “The Birthmark,” “Hills Like White Elephants,” “Everyday Use,” “The Lottery,” “The Things They Carried,” “The Red Convertible,” and “This Is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona.” For the first essay, students will use their knowledge of these texts to answer the following question:
Explore the concept of character motivation using two characters from different short stories. Find two characters within different tales that share the same motivation for their actions and analyze the factors that drive these characters. In the essay, be sure address the goal or goals on which each character bases his or her decisions. Be sure to support your assertions with textual evidence.
Requirements:
Essays must be 2-5 pages long. This means it is at least TWO FULL pages in length. Essays that do not meet minimum standards DO NOT earn passing grades.
Your essay must have an original and intriguing title. Untitled essays will not be read.
Use standard essay format: typed, double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins.
Because you will be quoting from the texts, please use proper MLA format both in the essay and in your Works Cited page at the end of the essay.
Students must STAY FORMAL in essay writing, which in this class means NO slang, NO contractions, NO ‘I’ statements and NO ‘you’ statements. I WILL DEDUCT POINTS for papers that are not up to the formal writing standards.

that would trigger a medical insurance claim. Describe the path taken to
resolve the insurance claim and any time limits that must be met in resolving
the claim. Why do you think these specific time frames are important?

Write a paper, approximately 5-7 pages, which considers one of the suggested topics below. This is not a long paper, so your writing will have to be efficient. Two things you’re doing in this paper: (i) exposition, i.e., the skillful explanation of a position/argument/view that we’ve been reading about, and (ii) argument, i.e., making your thesis clear and defending it. The main figures for us so far are J.S. Mill and Robert Nozick, so these topics concern their views. You should, of course, be considering objections/criticisms, but you should use these to help explain and analyze the view in question (so, e.g., the topics are not asking you to explain and analyze your personal, idiosyncratic view of justice, but rather Mill’s or Nozick’s; you are making an argument about those views). Critically evaluate J.S. Mill’s argument that justice is compatible with utilitarianism (see esp. Chapter 5 of Utilitarianism, but also consider relevant arguments in On Liberty): (i) explain what you take to be the key features of Mill’s view, (ii) consider what you take to be the most interesting and/or effective criticism of Mill here, and (iii) imagine what his response would be to the criticism you consider. Make sure that it is clear whether you think Mill can handle the objection you consider since this will become part of the main thesis of the paper: are you ultimately saying that Mill’s theory is a good one, or not?

Assignment : Value Co-creation
In this assignment, using concepts and tools from Frow et. al, as well as Argandona, you will analyze the processes and outcomes of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project and the LNG Canada Liquefied Natural Gas project in Kitimat BC. Both are big energy projects in BC and have many different types of stakeholders, and for which there is a lot of publicly available information from the project proponents and opponents.
Requirements:
1. Based on what is publicly available to you in the many online sources and media, describe the process(es) used by the Trans Mountain to co-create value through community engagement, and contrast this with the processes and outcomes of LNG Canada project at Kitimat, B.C.
2. Contrast the value chain (value creation, capture, and sharing ) of Trans Mountain and LNG Canada developments;
3. Compare the value outcomes (total value created; distribution of value) of the two projects and formulate a conclusion regarding the impact of community engagement on the outcome.
Your descriptions, contrast and comparison should be supported with information you have sourced and should be properly cited and referenced.

Creating Research Questions Assignment Based upon the research conducted for Project: Creating
Problem Statements Assignment, create research questions for the problem
identified. Context will need to be included (i.e. how the questions relate to
the problem statements), along with the actual problem statements and
