Discussion Questions: While the COVID-19 pandemic was not a biological attack, it does provide insight into domestic/international preparedness and response measures to a novel disease. Based on what you have learned through the course material and outside academic sources, analyze the impact of a specific biological weapon on a targeted population. How would this BW attack compare to the response to COVID-19? What changes to preparedness activities do you anticipate considering the COVID-19 response?

Write one paper, 5 pages minimum, which compares two cases of social movements, technologies/science, institutions, markets, economies (or ideas about them) THAT YOU DID NOT COMPARE in Paper 1, described in a minimum of two of the assigned readings in this course (please refer to the readings and do not write on film excerpts, podcasts, or topics that are not discussed in the readings unless you secure permission to do so four days in advance of the deadline). You may compare virtually any two objects from two separate assigned readings provided the comparison is logical and is discussed in a manner that is cogent and logical.
For example, if you haven’t done so already in Paper 1, you could compare how the markets in Nouvelle Cuisine and cotton production developed and operate. As a second example, you could compare how the readings discuss the role of institutions in the readings on Nouvelle Cuisine and those by Alexander Hamilton/James Madison (the former discusses the role of culinary schools and media and the latter discusses the role of the state/government). Third, you can compare how the readings account for the adoption of automobiles and the growth of electronics and computer innovation in India. You may use these examples, respond to the prompts below or create your own prompt that compares two objects from two of the assigned readings.

Discussion Questions: Based on what you have learned through the course material and outside academic sources, assess what particular chemical weapon poses the most significant threat to the United States; analyze the means by which state or non-state actors could make or acquire this specific chemical weapon; and hypothesize the physiological, psychological and social impact of an attack using this weapon. Consider both recent uses of chemical weapons in Syria and the United Kingdom and how either of these methods of attack might be used in the United States.

Daniel Gilbert’s explanation of the “psychological immune system,” of which
people appear to be generally ignorant, raises questions about how much
control people have over their own mental states. Tolentino, in her
identification of “traps,” and Foer, in his anxiety over “manipulation,” each
discuss ways that individuals are subject to “self-delusion” (Tolentino, Gilbert)
or even “hacking” (Foer) and “cooking” (Gilbert). The forces that delude,
manipulate, hack, and cook are of course different in each case, but there
appears to be some symmetry between what human minds do and what
outside forces do to them. HOW does human psychology, as described by
Gilbert (and, to a lesser extent, these other authors) account for our
ability to be manipulated? In other words, how does the mind itself
enable its own manipulation?

of significant complexity. A successful thesis will describe a specific
relationship or set of relationships between concepts from the texts. Your goal
is not to identify a set of ways that people are manipulated or decide whether
or not manipulation is a problem (so, this means, no theses that involve lists of
