HOW TO GET STARTED
Make use of the following steps and questions to guide yourself through your essay:

he first step to writing a research paper is coming up with a strong thesis statement. This thesis statement will be the focus of your paper and will convey what you ultimately want your reader to know. What point do you want to make in your paper? What argument are you trying to present to your reader?

A thesis statement is a strong, direct statement that identifies what your paper is about and what the message is that you want readers to take away from your writing. This will also give clear direction for yourself as you are writing the rest of your paper, as you’ll want to stick within the topic identified in your thesis statement and avoid jumping too far outside of your topic. Once you have your thesis statement, you are ready to complete this assignment.
In this step, you will create an annotated bibliography for your paper. For this portion of the assignment, you will create and submit the annotated bibliography to support the thesis of your research paper. CULTURAL EVENT REPORT
There will be three Cultural Event Reports required during the semester. The syllabus shares the following information about these reports, but I am making some slight changes from the syllabus statement (changes are in italics):

Each student must attend three cultural events during the course of the semester and submit written reports for each. All submissions must be done online through the D2L folder under the proper assignment name. The events have to occur over the course of the semester. City officials reported that nine people were pronounced dead at the scene and dozens injured. Witnesses stated that at approximately 8 pm, while hundreds of people were celebrating the start of the Christmas season and enjoying the numerous German artisans and the local church choir, the holiday festival was interrupted by the horrible sound of terrifying screams as the truck drove onto the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and started to run over people. It is estimated that the driver was able to drive the truck for approximately a quarter of a mile before the police were able to bring the vehicle to a halt.During an impromptu press conference, Denver Mayor Michelle Wong* advised that local, state, and federal officials are investigating this matter; she was reluctant to call this a terrorist attack. The FBIHQ, Counterterrorism Division, International Terrorism Operations Section has opened a preliminary terrorism investigation. You have been assigned to assist in the investigation and to task and coordinate the exchange of all pertinent information within the Intelligence Community. You also will be requested to draft the appropriate intelligence communications and conduct the appropriate FBIHQ briefings.The FBI Detroit Field Office advised FBIHQ that it initiated a preliminary civil rights investigation after the Detroit Police Department advised of a series of acts of vandalism on the Islamic Center of Detroit, the Masjid As-Sunnah, and Baitul Islam mosques. The purported leader of The Pack is William “Billy” Payne. Payne has an extensive criminal record and is currently imprisoned in the United States Penitentiary, Marion, Illinois, where he is serving a 20-year sentence for the armed robbery of a Brinks armored truck. Payne is still considered to be the leader of The Pack, and his writings and comments are regularly published on its website. The Pack is calling for a major protest targeting the Islamic communities of Michigan. It is being reported that The Pack is petitioning the City of Ann Arbor for a parade permit for September 11.

Assignment: Use the attached Strategic Assignment and combine with a situational report.

Edit: The situational reports needs: what is the Current Situation about? It is the factual Who, What, Where, etc., of what occurred. In this module, it should detail the “attacks” on two Detroit mosques. The details of these attacks should be your first paragraph. The second should be the local police suspects (The Pack). The third paragraph should be about The Pack and Billy Payne. You touched upon most of these facts, but your paragraph of what you believe should be in your Analysis Section with support analysis to support such a statement. What should be in your Analysis section? It should be showing these incidents were probably the work of “white supremacist” in response to the Denver attack. This is where you analyze the graffiti with supporting citations, then make the case to tie it to The Pack to include the significance of the numbers 14 and 88 in the White Supremacist movement. Your entire section of 3 separate sentences is not analysis. Each one of these “paragraphs” needed to be expanded with relevant citations to bolster your argument/position. With regard to your Collection Plan (Strategy Assignment) that you should have incorporated in your Recommended Actions section, you needed to think big picture. Does the FBI or any of other law enforcement agency have any open cases on The Pack? Are there any ongoing wiretaps (SIGINT)? Does the LE community have any sources (HUMINT) reporting on “The Pack”? If so, task them. If not, start thinking of how can the Pack be penetrated (HUMINT, SIGINT), etc.?

Key Concepts
Several different approaches can be used to remove, destroy, or inhibit the growth of microbes. The choice of approach usually depends on whether body tissues or inanimate objects are involved and the extent to which control is necessary.
Physical control methods include the use of heat, cold, irradiation, and mechanical removal. An example is the use of heat to sterilize an inoculating loop.
Chemical control methods involve the use of antimicrobial chemicals like alcohol or bleach. Some are appropriate for skin, like alcohol, while bleach would not be safe on human skin but could be used on inanimate objects.
Sterilization is the destruction of all microbial life, including viruses and endospores. Either something is sterile or it is not. There is no in-between.
Not all control methods need to create a sterile environment to be useful. Reducing the number of harmful microbes to a safe level can be sufficient. Disinfection or antisepsis creates a safe environment. The distinction between them has to do with whether the material involved is an object or body tissues. Antiseptics are safe to use on tissues; disinfectants are not.
All control methods target a specific part of a microbe. Targets include the cell wall, cell membrane, nucleic acid and protein synthesis, proteins, and specific metabolic pathways.
Most microbial cells are susceptible to basic control methods, but some organisms have the ability to resist these methods. Endospore forming organisms for example, are highly resistant to normal methods so they require more extreme methods to sterilize a material.

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of electromagnetic radiation; that is, energy that travels in waves and displays different properties based on its wavelength.
Ultraviolet light includes wavelengths at the lower end of the electromagnetic spectrum, between 100 and nearly 400 nanometers.

When UV radiation is applied to cells, it causes the formation of abnormal bonds in the DNA helix. This can interfere with DNA replication, reduce the expression of important genes and potentially cause death of the cell.
UV light causes the formation of thymine dimers. In the backbone of DNA a pair of adenine nucleotides would bind to a pair of thymine nucleotides on the opposite strand. Instead, the two thymine nucleotides form a bond to each other rather than the opposing adenine nucleotides.
Ultraviolet Radiation Damages the DNA of Microbial Cells
UV radiation has several uses as a disinfecting tool:
Disinfection of air and surfaces in medical and research facilities
Disinfection of clear liquids
Commercial uses in food processing facilities
Disinfection of personal items like cell phones
The use of UV radiation does not work well in all situations. UV radiation is only effective on surfaces with direct exposure and mostly clear liquids. UV light does not penetrate solid surfaces or cloudy liquids.

Overview
Many lab simulations encourage the growth of microbes under various conditions to study their characteristics or determine what makes them grow the most efficiently. In many other cases, both in the lab and daily life, there are reasons to control the growth of microbes.
Without adequate control methods, lab results may show contamination, food would spoil more quickly, water and beverages would be undrinkable, and we would have less ability to prevent and treat infectious disease.
In this simulation, you will learn methods that can be used to control the growth of microbes and ways to test the effectiveness of these methods.
UV light damages DNA and limits the growth of bacteria under certain conditions. This lab simulation will test the effects of UV light exposure for various lengths of time to determine how much time is necessary to control growth.

Before you begin
In this simulation, a uniform layer of growth, called a lawn, will be created on multiple agar plates.
After a bacterial lawn is created, half of the plate will be exposed to UV light for different lengths of time. Inhibition of growth will be detected when the plate shows a difference between each half, as seen here:

A card is placed on the plate to shield the right half and prevent exposure to UV light. The organisms are unaffected and free to grow and form a lawn.

UV light can be damaging to skin cells and the eyes with prolonged, unprotected exposure. Safety glasses, long sleeves and gloves will protect from this damage.
Remember that while this is a safe simulation, you should practice good laboratory hygiene protocols when translating this learning to the benchtop. This includes following aseptic technique procedures, proper handwashing, and the cleaning of benchtop surfaces as you complete similar exercises in the lab setting.
