Go to Opposing Viewpoints in Context (Links to an external site.) through Hatch Library databases and search for an article, video, or podcast that gives a viewpoint on a topic of your choice (see the video below for help on using the Opposing Viewpoints database). After choosing an article/video/podcast, post a response that answers the following questions:

Summarize the viewpoint of the article/video/podcast you chose: what is the issue and what argument is being provided on the issue?
Analyze the argument of the article in terms of its use of pathos, ethos, and logos: Where does the author appeal emotionally to readers? Where do they establish credibility as an author? Where do they use logic and reasoning to support their view? How do you know these are instances of pathos, ethos, and logos?
Discuss and analyze the argument of the article in terms of its acknowledgment of counterarguments: is it easy to understand the counterarguments acknowledged in the article? Is the relationship between the author’s argument and counterarguments clear? How effectively does the author refute these counterarguments on their topic?
Your discussion post must be at least three paragraphs in length, and must include an APA citation of the article/video/podcast you are discussing (Opposing Viewpoints provides completed APA citations for all their content). Check the discussion rubric for required responses to peers.

In 2000, FBI special agents lured Russian cyber criminals Vasiliy Gorshkov and Alexey Ivanov to the United States with a ruse involving a job interview. The FBI also downloaded evidence of their crimes from computers in Russia. Using information from your classroom, additional materials provided by your instructor, and your own independent research, discuss whether you think the FBI’s investigative techniques went too far. Did the FBI act under the color of any international laws or compacts, or did they “go off the reservation?” Do the FBI’s actions stand up to scrutiny under current US cyber laws? Using a case study approach, research an e-commerce retailer that is of interest to you and find information about how they use web analytics and SEO to monitor visitor traffic and customers.

Question to consider might be: What tools/techniques/approaches is the company using? How are they using the data they collect? Is on-page SEO set up to facilitate better data collection? Navigate the company’s web site and offer your own perspectives on additional tools, data collection methods and/or metrics they could use to improve their overall web analytic efforts. Describe the appeals of pathos and logos in the I’m the NRA ad featuring Governor Atiyeh. The ad is located in the “Intro to Rhetoric” module.

Choose 2 specific ways that the ad uses an appeal to pathos (emotion) to persuade the audience. You will also describe 2 appeals to logos (reason) found in the ad. Remember that you might not be the targeted audience. If that is the case, then you will have decide who the audience might be and how that audience might be persuaded by the appeals.

You will identify the appeal and explain how that appeal works persuasively.

Note pathos appeals come in many forms and can elicit many responses–from fear to love, from pity to guilt to patriotism etc…

Also note that the use of logical fallacies (whether purposeful or not) is an attempt at an appeal to logos (one’s sense of logic), even though ultimately the reasoning is not sound. Use the resources I posted on fallacies to learn about some of the common fallacies found in advertising and writing.
