You and Officer Bob are the first officers on the scene of a drug deal that went wrong. You and Officer Bob begin to canvass the area and notice a bag of money nearby. Officer Bob advises you not to photograph or tag the evidence at this time. If you submit nothing by the deadline, you’ll receive a zero for the week — but remember that you only need to do three for the whole semester.
It’s very common for people unfamiliar with history to excuse their lack of knowledge by saying simply, “I wasn’t there, so how can I know?” Most of the time, this is a cop-out. There are plenty of documents and other sources of information to help us recover the past, and it’s usually possible to know quite a lot about anything in the past — if we’re willing to work at it a bit.
But interestingly, one of the most common features of our lives is one of the hardest to recapture from the past: What did people sound like? Before it was possible to record sound (which wasn’t until the 1800s), no human voice could be heard again once that person died. An interesting question, then, is whether early Americans sounded like British people, with a British accent, or if they had developed their own way of speaking — the “American accent” many of us use today.

#1 Immigrant Literature: (26 pts., minimum of three quotes) Immigrant literature typically portrays characters’ experiences after they have migrated and as they experiece surprise, disappointment, challenges, and opportunities in the United States. Often these characters experience a split sense of identity, especially if they live in two language cultures. They may meet this through assimilation, cultural separatism, or acculturation, which may take the form of cultural syncretism (the formation of a third, hybrid culture). Pick a character from The Leavers and explain how the character responds to crossing borders. What strategies help him or her to survive or thrive? What circumstances hobble his or her ability to survive or thrive?
Concepts: Answer the two of the questions below and answer in a minimum of two full pages. (12 pts. each, minimum of two quotes in each)
#2 Much of our focus in the African American literature section of the course has been on the rhetorical methods a performer or writer might use to effect social change. These methods include appropriation (of a term, a symbol, a text, or a cultural form from the dominant culture), abrogation, and historical recovery. Using “New Jesus” (linked) and explain how the writer uses one or more of these tools and what the impact of this use is.
#3 Drawing on the concepts of cultural appropriation and cultural syncretism, identify a moment or moments in “The Water Musem” and explain the effect of cultural borrowing of one sort or another. This case discussion continues with the Smithfield Furniture Company. (You may desire to briefly review the facts provided to you in Discussions 1—3 to address this week’s discussion.)
It is now April 1, 2020. The 2015 purchase of You Figure it Out was culminated, and the planned integration of their manufacturing and sales, as described in Discussion 3, fully completed.
The company now has 411 stores and 24,000 employees. 344 of the 411 retail outlets all sell the upscale and moderately priced lines; 51 retail outlets (Texas (6), California (13), New York (15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and North Carolina (4) sell only the You Figure it Out brand. These 51 stores employ 2,000 of the 24,000 workers.
There are 16 stores overseas, Spain (4), France (4), Germany (4), and England (4), that sell all 3 product lines. These stores employ 1,000 workers. Half of these employees work in retail stores. The other half work at various seaports in their countries, receiving furniture and delivering the furniture produced in the US to various stores and customers.
In 2015, Margot Smithfield and the 12-member board of directors purchased You Figure it Out, a moderately profitable 51 store chain of ultra-modern furniture. The furniture and furniture-related accessories of You Figure it Out were all made in China. Still, with the 2015 acquisition, all furniture is manufactured at 1 of the 5 furniture manufacturing plants in the United States. Their retail stores are located in Texas (6), California (13), New York (15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and North Carolina (4).

2019 Net Profit – $440 Million
April 30, 2020 (Cash Reserves) – $2.8 Billion
Sixty percent (60%) of sales, gross revenues, and expenses are associated with the upscale product line.
Twenty-five percent (25%) of sales, gross revenues, and expenses are associated with the You Figure it Out product line.
Fifteen percent (15%) of sales, gross revenues, and expenses are associated with overseas outlets.
In other words, for this case activity, all 3 product lines are proportional in terms of revenue and expenses.
The Management Issue: Presently, it is believed that as early as March 2020, the possibility exists for the company to be in the throes of a worldwide rapidly spreading, highly contagious, debilitating, and often fatal viral pandemic. The company must plan for this eventuality to occur.
