Vitamins and minerals (Elements of Nutrition)

TASK: Select a vitamin or mineral and address the associated question(s). AVOID DUPLICATES–scan your peers’ posts before making your selection. To that end, be sure to label your subject heading with the selected vitamin/mineral.
Imagine you are attending your yearly health risk assessment. When you came to the appointment, you thought you had a proper diet and were of average health. It turns out, the doctor that examines you has a special interest in nutrition. She notices some inconsistencies with what you discuss with her and suggests that you may have a deficiency or toxicity of your selected vitamin or mineral. Your post should include the following information:
* Based upon the vitamin or mineral that you have chosen, what were your doctor’s observations and diagnosis?
* Do you have a toxicity or deficiency? Explain any disorders associated with the deficiency or toxicity.
* Briefly describe what your recommended daily allowance based upon your profile (sex, age, physical status, etc.) should be, your present intake estimate, and your action plan (adjustment in diet, etc.).
* If left untreated, what might be some of the more serious long term and detrimental effects this might have on your body?
* Which special populations (pregnant women, children, etc.) are most affected and why?
* What other prevention, treatment, and safety measures might be beneficial to regulate your health?

Make the argument that Rousseau thinks that moral evil is an inescapable result of human freedom.

Formatting: All exercises, drafts, and final essays should be formatted according to: MLA, Chicago, Harvard or MHRA, style guidelines. The preferred citation style is MHRA Assignments

The prompts below are possible places to start for Paper #1. They are ideas that will help you get started. You may choose one, connect two of them, or discard them all and employ one of the argumentative styles identified in the syllabus. You may also write a response paper to the Rousseau & Voltaire dispute
Prompt: Make the argument that Rousseau thinks that moral evil is an inescapable result of human freedom.
Prompt: What does Voltaire have to say about the evil occasioned by the earthquake that leveled Lisbon and why?
Prompt: Should we use the term ‘evil’ in our moral, political, and legal discourse, or is evil an outdated and empty concept which should be abandoned?
Prompt: What is the “classical problem of evil” and how does St. Augustine seek to solve it?
Prompt: How does the doctrine of Karma, according to Matilal, (rationally and morally) respond to the existence of evil?
Paper #1 should demonstrate close engagement with one or more of the texts we have read so far, evaluating their claims and arguments they put forward. You will likely need to focus on a few significant passages, but remember to efficiently contextualise those passages within the essay(s) as a whole. Paper #1 should argue for a clear thesis (and remember: what the paper argues for emerges in relation to what the paper argues with or against). Evidence from the text is important!
Remember: No essay is perfect. The goal for these response papers is to evaluate, discuss or critically engage with some aspect of the authors’ ideas. Evaluation is often obscured by excessive praise or spit for the authors. Thus, avoid panegyric, and avoid adulation. In addition, you need not resolve every ambiguity or paradox in the texts you read. In fact, sometimes identifying a lingering ambiguity in the text can strengthen your own argument.

Musculoskeletal Function

G.J. is a 71-year-old overweight woman who presents to the Family Practice Clinic for the first time complaining of a long history of bilateral knee discomfort that becomes worse when it rains and usually feels better when the weather is warm and dry. “My arthritis hasn’t improved a bit this summer though,” she states. Discomfort in the left knee is greater than in the right knee. She has also suffered from low back pain for many years, but recently it has become worse. She is having difficulty using the stairs in her home. The patient had recently visited a rheumatologist who tried a variety of NSAIDs to help her with pain control. The medications gave her mild relief but also caused significant and intolerable stomach discomfort. Her pain was alleviated with oxycodone. However, when she showed increasing tolerance and began insisting on higher doses of the medication, the physician told her that she may need surgery and that he could not prescribe more oxycodone for her. She is now seeking medical care at the Family Practice Clinic. Her knees started to get significantly more painful after she gained 20 pounds during the past nine months. Her joints are most stiff when she has been sitting or lying for some time and they tend to “loosen up” with activity. The patient has always been worried about osteoporosis because several family members have been diagnosed with the disease. However, nonclinical manifestations of osteoporosis have developed.

Case Study Questions
Define osteoarthritis and explain the differences with osteoarthrosis. List and analyze the risk factors that are presented on the case that contribute to the diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
Specify the main differences between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, make sure to include clinical manifestations, major characteristics, joints usually affected and diagnostic methods.
Describe the different treatment alternatives available, including non-pharmacological and pharmacological that you consider are appropriate for this patient and why.
How would you handle the patient concern about osteoporosis? Describe your interventions and education you would provide to her regarding osteoporosis.
When the question asks to list risk factors and explain why. I’m looking for a list of risk factors (in a list format not in an essay format) and an explanation of why you think each risk factor is a risk factor.

The Right to Write

A university journalism class investigates a
man who is convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence. They have a
source within the prosecutor’s office who has given them information proving
that the prosecutor tampered with evidence. The judge has subpoenaed the
class’s records, but the students and teacher refuse to give up their source.
The judge is threatening to throw the whole class in jail until they comply.

Respond to the following:

Do you think the
class should hand over the source or should the class protect the source, even
if it means they all go to jail? State your opinion and explain your reasons,
citing, as they apply to this case, the laws and ethical standards you have
learned.

Data Driven Decision-making in Complex Systems

Consider how data analysis contributes to safe, high quality, efficient delivery of healthcare. Investigate the role of information management in the evaluation of outcome achievement and provision of data to drive strategic decision-making. Identify one specific data point for which information is collected within a healthcare system. Develop a 4 – 6 page paper to address the rubric expectations; use a minimum of 5 scholarly sources to support your work.
Provide an introduction to the paper.
Explain one selected data point and the purpose for the collection of this data within the healthcare system. Describe how this data point measures quality, safety, and/or efficiency within the system. Discuss one internal or external benchmark surrounding this data point that serves as a measure or indicator of success.
Describe a case scenario where outcomes regarding this data point fall short of meeting the required benchmark. Identify the stakeholders impacted by the poor outcome, and the consequences realized by each stakeholder. Discuss the potential impact on organizational quality, safety, and/or efficiency that results.
Describe how outcomes surrounding this data point reflect organizational performance regarding quality, safety, or efficiency. Explain how the data in the case scenario can inform strategic decision-making to improve organizational outcomes. Create an action plan to correct the poor outcomes noted in the case scenario. Explain the action steps, stakeholder involvement, influencing factors that will impact the plan.
Provide a conclusion to the paper.
