U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (n.d.). Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults: What you need to know. National Institute of Mental Health. Retrieved February 5, 2022, from https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/add-what-you-need-to-know
In order for stimulant medications to be clinically appropriate, a clinically relevant diagnosis of Attention Hyperactive Deficit Disorder, must be present. The issue that presents itself is misdiagnosis which results in a patient potentially being incorrectly medicated. The opening paragraphs of this article discuss how childhood ADD/ADHD progress as the person ages. Symptoms of this diagnosis mimic other mental health disorders such as, anxiety and depression, also discussed in the article. This issue particularly targets adult’s who suffer from ADD. Symptoms often present very differently in adults when compared to that of children. This is supported when comparing aspects of life that are directly affected, which include work, relationships, and obligations such as appointments.
Treatments options for both adults and children consist of both psycho-stimulants and non stimulant medications; however, the manner in which they are prescribed can differ drastically. In children, the symptoms are more evident, where as adults are often misdiagnosed with disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and treated with antidepressants or anxiolytics before trying a psycho stimulant. While the question at hand investigates whether or not there is a stigma surrounding adults diagnosed with ADD, being treated with psycho stimulants, the stigma being, adults are likely be to be at risk for substance abuse, the more important question should investigate how substance abuse can be prevented in general with proper diagnosis and treatment of this disorder itself.
Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. (n.d.). Symptoms and causes. Mayo Clinic. Retrieved February 5, 2022, from https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/adult-adhd/symptoms-causes/syc-20350878?p=1
It is clinically evident that adult ADD is substantially more difficult to diagnose than that of a child. A major concern is that other disorders can be prominent in both childhood and adulthood. With children, behavioral disorders are more likely to exist rather than psychological disorders, as discussed in this article. Adults are more susceptible to long term psychological damage than children because by the time they have been diagnosed, they have usually been treated with improper psychiatric medications. This is quite concerning because it can lead to suicidal idealization. Misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment can be quite literally fatal if one is prescribed the wrong psychiatric medication and is successful with suicidal attempts. Adults are likely to develop co morbid conditions like depression and anxiety when left unevaluated and untreated.
Although medications utilized to treat adult ADHD do have a high potential for abuse, it is the lesser of the two evils when we take a step back and look into all other substances that have a high potential of abuse, such as alcohol, which adults with ADHD are likely to utilize in order to cope with the impact that misdiagnosis has on an adult’s life.

At the latest Lunch and Learn seminar for TLG consultants, Winnie begins the workshop with a discussion of the case of Warren Medical.

Background Facts: Warren Medical contracted to purchase five cases of disinfectant from Clean for $100.00 per case. Clean and Warren Medical signed the written sales agreement, and it included all the necessary terms for a valid and enforceable contract.

Clean timely delivered the disinfectant to Warren Medical. However, because Warren Medical’s employees were busy with other deliveries, they moved the disinfectants to a temporary garage storage facility. They did not inspect the goods before moving them. Three weeks later, Warren Medical’s employees finally opened the cases and discovered the disinfectants were frozen. Warren medical wants Clean to replace the goods.
