For this prompt you will read (:-O) an empirical paper from a psychology research team in Uganda who has a very different approach to social sciences than you have been traditionally taught during your college experience. This will expose you to different perspectives on psychology and practice reading empirical journal articles.
Here are some questions to consider replying to:
What are the global goals of the Ugandan research team? What is their approach to psychology? What type of psychology department/partnerships are they trying to develop? What did they find in their study? How would those findings compare to cultures you are familiar with? How might it relate to other material in the book? What is liberation psychology? Why might it matter to Uganda and or the Global South?
You are not required to respond to all those questions, if you have any other questions/points you want to primarily focus on or include, do it.
Please note, be mindful not to draw broad generalizations about this culture without providing evidence from other sources (such as linking to an article). Well intentioned thoughts can be unintentionally ethnocentric (Links to an external site.)if you really haven’t unpacked the implications of your argument. If you are not sure, the best scientific practices are to temper your arguments by adding caveats.
Best Writer
Write a short paper in which you consider whether the Underground Man is cursed by his own intellect.
Choice B: Write a one and a half (1.5) page paper with a clear thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion that answers the following question: In Notes from the Underground, Dostoyevsky offers a portrait of a man who seems bent on proving his opinions on the rigidity of rational thought versus the open-ended world of free will, even if that freedom of choice means that he is also entiled to self-destructive action. Write a short paper in which you consider whether the Underground Man is cursed by his own intellect. Make sure that you include the signal phrase (title of text and full name of author) in your opening paragraph, and that you directly reference the text with at least one quote, properly formatted for MLA.
DRAW SPECIFICALLY FROM THE TEXTS. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. DO NOT REFERENCE OUTSIDE SOURCES (Google, Wikipedia, student guides, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.) FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.
USE STANDARD MLA HEADING (see MLA Style Sheet under “Class Information”), CREATE YOUR OWN TITLE FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT (do not call it Assignment 3 or by the title of the text or the name of the author), AND DOUBLE-SPACE ALL WRITING.
Write a six-word story that you feel best expresses your analysis of or your reactions (intellectual and/or emotional) to the vignettes.
There is a legend that the famous U.S. writer, Ernest Hemingway, wrote a story in only six words as a result of a bet in a bar. His story was: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” (Roncero-Menendez, 2017, para. 1). There are disputes about the veracity of the story, but nevertheless, the six-word story has become a popular writing prompt. It requires that one is economical with one’s words, but also requires creativity in one’s ability to utilize the right words in the right combination.
In Part II of Life in Schools, McLaren shares some of his experiences from early in his teaching career. The vignettes are powerful and moving. Once you have read Part II, take some time to process and reflect on the vignettes. After some reflection, for your post, you will write a six-word story that you feel best expresses your analysis of or your reactions (intellectual and/or emotional) to the vignettes. You can focus on one of the students that really stood out to you, or one or two of the vignettes, or all of the vignettes taken together as a whole. After sharing your six-word story, please explain your story. In your explanation, include whatever information you think will help us understand what you were attempting to convey in your story.
To be clear then, your Critical Response Paper for this week should consist of: (1) your six-word story (responding to the vignettes), (2) your explanation of the six-word story.
The minimum length requirement for each Critical Response Paper is one single-spaced page (with one-inch margins and size 12 font). The page minimum does not include a cover page, cover page material, and references page. Citation and reference formatting must adhere to the APA guidelines, 7th edition. Failure to follow the above length and formatting requirements (including APA) will negatively impact the grades for the papers.

CHAPTER SUMMARY:
Lipids in the body not only serve as energy reserves, but also protect the body from temperature extremes, cushion the vital organs, and provide the major material of cell membranes.Table 3–2 summarizes the members of the lipid family. The predominant lipids both in foods and in the body are triglycerides, which have glycerol backbones with three fatty acids attached. Fatty acids vary in the length of their carbon chains and their degree of saturation. Those that are fully loaded with hydrogens are saturated; those that are missing hydrogens and therefore have double bonds are unsaturated (monounsaturated or polyunsaturated). Most triglycerides contain more than one type of fatty acid. Fatty acid saturation affects the physical characteristics and storage properties of fats. Hydrogenation, which makes polyunsaturated fats more saturated, gives rise to trans-fatty acids, altered fatty acids that may have health effects similar to those of saturated fatty acids. Linoleic acid and linolenic acid are essential nutrients. In addition to serving as structural parts of cell membranes, they make powerful substances that help regulate blood pressure, blood clot formation, and the immune response. Phospholipids, including the lecithins, have a unique chemical structure that allows them to be soluble in both water and fat. In the body, phospholipids are major constituents of cell membranes; the food industry uses phospholipids as emulsifiers. Sterols include cholesterol, bile, vitamin D, and the sex hormones. Only animal-derived foods contain significant amounts of cholesterol.
High intakes of saturated or trans fats contribute to heart disease, obesity, and other health problems. High blood cholesterol, specifically, poses a risk of heart disease, and high intakes of saturated fat contribute most to high blood cholesterol. High intakes of trans-fatty acids also appear to raise blood cholesterol. Cholesterol in foods presents less of a risk. Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-6 and omega-3 families protect against heart disease. When monounsaturated fat such as olive oil replaces saturated and trans fats in the diet, the risk of heart disease may be lessened. Though some fat in the diet is necessary, health authorities recommend a diet moderate in total fat and low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.

CHAPTER SUMMARY:
Carbohydrate is the body’s preferred energy source. Six simple sugars are important in nutrition: the three monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, and galactose) and the three disaccharides (sucrose, lactose, and maltose). The three disaccharides are pairs of monosaccharides; each contains glucose paired with one of the three monosaccharides. The polysaccharides (chains of monosaccharides) are glycogen, starches, and fibers. Both glycogen and starch are storage forms of glucose—glycogen in the body and starch in plants—and both yield energy for human use. The dietary fibers also contain glucose (and other monosaccharides), but human digestive enzymes cannot break their bonds, so they yield little, if any, energy.
In moderate amounts, sugars pose no major health threat. Excessive sugar intake may increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies and dental caries, however. A person deciding to limit daily sugar intake should recognize that not all sugars need to be restricted, just concentrated sweets with added sugars, which are high in kcalories and relatively lacking in other nutrients. Sugars that occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, and milk are acceptable.
Two types of alternative sweeteners are sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners. Sugar alcohols are carbohydrates, but they yield slightly less energy than sucrose. Sugar alcohols do not contribute to dental caries. The artificial sweeteners are not carbohydrates and yield no energy. Like the sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners do not promote tooth decay.
A diet rich in starches and dietary fibers helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, GI disorders, and possibly some types of cancer. It also supports efforts to manage body weight. For these reasons, recommendations urge people to eat plenty of whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits—enough to provide 45 to 65 percent of the daily energy from carbohydrate.
Grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes contribute dietary fiber to people’s diets and, like milk, also contribute energy-yielding starches and dilute sugars. Food labels list grams of total carbohydrate and also provide separate listings of grams of fiber and sugar.
