Political Economy of American Industrialization

The transformative nature of industrialization brought important changes to the American experience. Both the American Yawp and the primary source readings (Johnson) indicate that contemporaries offered suggestions for how to reform society (Lloyd and George), while others advocated for essentially the status quo (Sumner and Carnegie). Each of the authors present a distinct view of political economy, properly defined as those interrelationships between individuals, government, and public policy. In short, the relationship between the political and the economic. It is traditionally understood that America has always committed itself to a capitalist political economy. That is, we cherish individual property rights, equality of opportunity, minimal government intervention in the economy, and aim to construct a society where individuals are allowed to maximize economic opportunities and personal wealth.
For this essay, students will identify and discuss the political economy gleamed from two of the primary source readings taken from Johnson’s Reading the American Past. Political economy is defined here loosely as a vision for the economy, an ideological disposition or understanding of the economy, an economic program, suggestions for reform, the role of individuals and government, capital and labor, and property, in the economy, or suggestions for public and private economic policy, etc. Essentially, the essay needs to capture and relay the main message of two of the sources found in the Johnson selections.
For instance, Sumner is generally interpreted as one of America’s principal advocates of laissez-faire and, sometimes, Social Darwinism. If you choose to write about Sumner, explain this version of political economy as Sumner describes it. Or, Gompers was an American socialist leader. Explain his understanding of how the economy should function. Students need to illustrate a sharp command and clear understanding of the main ideas of the two readings they have selected. It’s a good idea to pull deftly selected passages (quotations) from the text, but do so judiciously.
These are the selections from the Johnson Reading the American Past that student will choose from. Pick two:
–Johnson, Document 18.1, William Graham Sumner on Social Obligations.
–Johnson, Document 18.2, Henry Lloyd Attacks Monopolies.
–Johnson, Document 18.4, Andrew Carnegie Explains the Gospel of Wealth.
–Johnson, Document 18.5, Henry George Explains Why Poverty is a Crime.
–Johnson, Document 19.1, A Textile Worker Explains the Labor Market.
–Johnson, Document 19.4, Walter Wyckoff Listens to Revolutionary Workers.
–Johnson, Document 20.4, Conflicting Views about Labor Unions (Thompson
And Gompers).

Purpose
Reflection paper on Joanne Greenberg, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. This paper will offer students a chance to look at the novel as a whole and evaluate the arc of Deborah Blau’s hospitalization, and the role psychotherapy played in her healing, according to the author’s depiction.
By successfully completing this assignment students will be able to:
Explain how the patient’s presentation and the psychotherapist’s interpretation and practice reflect the contexts in which they have come into a relationship (CLO #3)
Analyze the evidentiary basis for historical and contemporary debates concerning the origins and treatment of mental illness as biological, or as culturally and environmentally produced (CLO #5)
Please write a critical essay about Joanne Greenberg’s novel, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. The essay should be at least 750 words – no penalty for going over the suggested word count.
Choose one of the following prompts to answer:
Topic choice #1:
Analyze the arc of Deborah Blau’s hospital stay. How long was she in the hospital? What were the components of the treatment and the hospital environment that influenced change, both positive and negative, in Deborah? Consider the psychotherapy with Dr. Fried; the interaction on the wards with patients and staff; and the rules and structure of the hospital. Consider as well the course of Deborah’s illness as you understand it. What were the major factors that affected Deborah’s fluctuating view of herself in the world? Why do you think she got better and was able to leave the hospital?
Topic choice #2:
If you would like to write on a different topic related to the Greenberg novel and the Hornstein biography, please run it past me in plenty of time for you to complete the essay.
Use as context the background chapters in Hornstein’s biography of Frieda Fromm Reichmann, her career at Chestnut Lodge, and her real-life treatment of the teenager Joanne Greenberg. Feel free also to use insights or arguments in the video Take These Broken Wings. You are of course free to use additional sources, but this is not required.
Important note: In the discussion post, please identify which topic choice is being answered.

analyze the primary source document

analyze the primary source document: Columbus’ letter to the King and Queen of Spain, 1494
the primary source document website: https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/source/columbus2.asp (I uploaded this document just in case you can’t open the website, but you can also use this website to read the document online)
It is very important to review Rael’s “How to Read a Primary Source”. (website: https://courses.bowdoin.edu/writing-guides/reading/how-to-read-a-primary-source/) This chapter from his Reading, Writing and Researching for History will provide you with insight on how to approach answering the questions that are asked below. As you read through the source, you may wish to organize your thoughts by using CLUE or PAPER.

Based on your primary source, answer the following questions:
What is at stake for the creator/author in this text? Why do you think they wrote it? What evidence in the text tells you this? Note: Make sure to identify the correct author. Halsall is not the author but the editor of the website. The author will be identified in the title of the primary source.
What is the document trying to do? How does it make its case? (Similar to why they wrote the document).
Are there arguments or concerns in the document that the creator/author has not clearly stated or argued? If yes, provide a specific example and explain why. (In other words, are there gaps in their reasoning and/or logic? Have they left out key information that could mislead the reader?)
Do you think the creator/author is credible and reliable? Use at least one specific example to explain why. Note: Please review the definitions of credible and reliable in “How to Read a Primary Source” before you answer this question. You will be graded based on the information found on that webpage.
Remember that I am asking you to base your answer JUST on the primary source. You don’t need to do any further research. Connect your interpretation (your answer to the questions) to specific evidence you find in the primary source document.
Compose a 500-750 word response which addresses the questions above, based on specific examples found in the primary source. You will submit your answers in a pdf document. Note: Some students answer each question separately while others compose a short essay with an introduction, thesis and concluding paragraph. Either is acceptable as long as the answers to each question is easily identifiable.
Evaluation/Rubric
Your analysis will be evaluated based on the following criteria. The analysis:
is within the required range of 500-750 words,
is free of any errors in spelling and grammar,
is written in your own words,
provides Chicago Style citations for any quoted or paraphrased material,
answers questions clearly and effectively,
uses direct, specific examples from the primary source, and
analyzes (not summarizes) the primary source.

milestone three

Understanding the different ways to communicate and the benefits of using different mediums of communication could significantly improve the effectiveness of any communication. In todays’ business world, the impact and effectiveness of social media are increasing, as it allows consumers and businesses to have two-way relationships and can even transform consumers into ambassadors for the brand and/or product. Strategically choosing the specific types of communication and the most appropriate medium to deliver that communication can have a significant impact upon a business.
Assess different types of communication and the types of mediums that can be used to deliver these particular communications to facilitate engagement of the intended audience.

US Relations pre Spanish American war

Demonstrate an understanding of the growth and development of the Executive Branch leadership by looking at the dynamics between the president and Congress in the period from the founding to the Spanish-American War.

Biblical based topical analysis and biblical integration needs to be specific to the subject with a depth that is greater than a general Christian worldview.
