Biomedical Ethics- An examination of the ethical problems and moral foundations of medicine

readings focus on the monetary aspects of health care and research. The first reading, The case for allowing kidney sales, by Janet Radcliffe-Richards et al challenges the notion that buying organs from live vendors should be prohibited and raises questions about how much financial control over ones own body does an individual have. Currently it is legal to sell renewable tissue such as blood products or gametes in the United States, but not non renewable such as a kidney. The authors go step by step through the most common arguments against allowing the sale of kidneys and give their opinion on why they are not valid. While they ultimately do not express an opinion on the topic, they believe the current arguments against the sale of organs do not justify its prohibition
The second reading, Paying tissue donors: The legacy of Henrietta Lacks, deals with the question, how much financial claim do individuals have to tissue after it has been donated. The reading focuses around the case of Henrietta Lacks who was treated for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins in the 1950s. Cells from her cancer were eventually used to make an immortal cell line that is used in research labs throughout the world today. Even though these cells have become very lucrative, neither her nor her family received any form of compensation. Even today in the age of informed consent (which was not around during Henrietta’s time) when a patient agrees to have a tissue sample taken, the consent very often acknowledges that their tissue maybe used for research or educational purposes. While the overwhelming majority of these tissue samples do not develop into lucrative cell lines like Henrietta Lack’s did, some will. This raises many questions about compensation and ownership, which the authors very nicely delve into.
We are also about half way through the Dr. Death podcast. So far we have seen what happens to patients when the rules in place to ensure their safety fail. We have not yet seen what, if any, repercussions Dr. Duntsch will face. What are some things that surprised you so far about the Texas medical system and the laws in place for patient safety.
Please feel free to react and give your opinion on any topic from the readings or beyond that are of interest to you.

Youth Victimization

Youth Victimization
Summarize the “Youth Victimization: Prevalence and Implications” report. In your assignment, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this study. Do you agree with the findings of this report? Why or why not?
Requirements:
· 2-3 pages double spaced

PROBLEMETIZING SEX PAPER

Write a 2-page paper on Caster Semenya describing what happened to her career as a runner. How did FISA determine her sex? How many “experts” were called in to consult? What should determine sex–DNA tests, hormone levels, genitalia? Do you think Semanya received fair treatment? What does her experience tell us about intersexed bodies and what is the difference between intersexed individuals and transgendered people?

Personal Narrative/ Descriptive

Topic
The topic of the paper is as follows: talk about an event that changed your life and the place where it happened, so that you can use both narration and description. Think about narration and description as occupying equal parts of the paper, approximately. Take your time to unfold the events (chronologically is the easiest way, but you can make use of flashbacks too), and also take your time to immerse the reader into the place of your choice, making it vivid through an appeal to the five senses.

Narrative component
For the narrative, aside from paragraphs detailing different moments in the sequence of events, think also about the “before” and “after” of the crucial event that changed your life in some way (positively or negatively). What were you like before, or how was your life before the main event? What changed, how, and was it worth going through that event, or would you change it in retrospect?

Descriptive component
For the description, make use of the five senses (it is all right if you don’t use all of them as long as you use at least three). Think about how to make an unfamiliar place familiar to readers who may not have been there, and how to make it stand out in an interesting way. Use figures of speech. This is also your chance to create mood and atmosphere, so think about the impact of the events and match the description’s mood to the emotions related to the events.

Structure
The structure of the paper should be clear and cohesive.
The introduction can follow an inverted pyramid structure.
The intro will end with a thesis, where the reader finds out what events you’ll be talking about and their impact, as well as the place you’ll describe.
The body paragraphs should be ordered in a way that is easy to follow and logical. You can alternate between description and narration, interlace them in a smooth way, or completely separate them, as long as it makes sense and you still follow a thread that leads to the impact the events had on you.
The conclusion should not bring up new details but put things into perspective.

Transitions
Make sure to use transitions between paragraphs; also use topic sentences.

Formatting and Mechanics
For format, use MLA style, as explained in the lectures.
Make sure that you proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.

Length
The rough draft* and the final draft both should be 4-5 pages long.
