Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)
The Topic Proposal is a 1-2 page assignment that introduces your topic, explains why it is compelling to you, describes what you already know about it, details what more you need to learn about the issue, explains why you think it is important or significant, and expresses any opinions you have about your issue –whether you are for or against it, etc.
I. Topic Selection
First, read the Topic Selection Handout (found in Modules)
lf these instructions are not followed, your topic will be rejected, points deducted, and you must start over.
Next, come up with a paper topic that meets the criteria for an arguable or debatable topic.
Once you have selected a topic, do some background reading on your topic to make sure that you can find enough information on it to get a general idea of the topic.
Your background reading should consist of credible sources, such as journal articles, magazine articles, books, reputable websites, etc.
You can find credible sources using the online resources available from the Co-Lin Libraries. Instructions for searching these resources can be found in the Online Databases Handout (in Modules).
II. Paper Write a 1-2-page Topic Proposal paper addressing the following five items:
Introduce the topic, which should consist of a controversial, debatable topic. Frame the argument, and briefly describe the two basic opposing viewpoints on the issue. End this item by presenting the issue in question form. For example: Should the United States have stricter gun control laws? Should capital punishment be abolished or allowed in America? Should the United states have universal health care? Should medical marijuana be legalized in all states?
Explain why the issue is compelling or interesting to you. Why do you want to write a paper on it?
Briefly describe what you already know about it. If you do not know much about the issue, just say so. Do not make up information about it or plagiarize information about it from some source. Just provide general information or common knowledge reported in the news and so on; do not state specific facts or statistics that you would need to consult some source to learn.
Explain what else you need to learn about the issue in order to write a persuasive research paper about it.
Clearly state which position you plan to take on the issue in your paper.
This position will form the basis of the thesis you will attempt to prove in your research paper.
The thesis is the main point you want to prove in your paper.
For example, if you think capital punishment should be abolished and hope to argue this point in your paper, then this viewpoint would inform your thesis.
You do not have to stick to this position. In fact, is common for students to modify their views or positions on issues as they conduct research on the issue.
Briefly explain why you take this position on the issue.
If you are not sure which side of the issue you support yet, just state this.
You may do some research in the process of selecting a paper topic.
If you do learn some specific facts or statistics about your topic from your preliminary research, save them for the research paper. The object of this issue proposal is for you to introduce your topic and state what you already know about it, what you would like to know about it, why it is important or interesting to you, and your position on the issue if you have one.
Since this paper should not incorporate any research material, it does not need to be documented with citations.
If you use any material from a source in your paper without citing it, this constitutes plagiarism, which will result in a failing grade. For information on plagiarism, please read “Avoiding Plagiarism” on pages 424-26 in your textbook, Steps to Writing Well.
Since you have not learned how to use and document source material, DO NOT USE SOURCE MATERIAL IN THE PAPER.
View the Topic Proposal Sample Paper (found in Modules)
Title your document as follows: Topic: Issue Proposal. For instance, Capital Punishment: Issue Proposal.

DO NOT use any outside source material–If you do this, you will receive a zero.
I only want to know what YOU ALREADY know, think, believe, want to learn, etc. about the topic.

Grading Criteria: Your assignment will be assessed using the following criteria.
Content: the writing showed that you understood the questions the instructor asked, you have delivered a well-written paper with an appropriate introduction and conclusion.
Instructions: you followed all the instructions.
Formatting: the document is professional and formatted correctly. The assignment will specify the accepted length of the paper. You should always include your name on the assignment as well as the title of the assignment.
Citations and References: If you used external references, the full reference is in the proper format with the necessary information. You cited those references appropriately within the content of your paper. If you use external references, you MUST include the full reference. You also need to cite the source within your paper. For citations, you can either directly quote the source when the author has something profound to say or you can reword the information from the source when the author has a unique idea. In either case, give credit to the author for the quotation or the unique idea but the bulk of your paper should be you expounding on the author’s ideas with your own words and ideas. Do not over-cite your paper. You should research the topic, process the information you learn, present your response to the assignment in your own words, and support that response with citations from your sources. Do not cite every sentence/paragraph of your assignment.
Spelling and Grammar: there are few or no spelling or grammar errors. Everyone makes mistakes; therefore, you will receive full points if there are minimal spelling and grammar errors. Use correct spelling and grammar. The instructor does check for spelling and grammatical errors. The instructor will not correct spelling and grammar for you, but you will lose points if it is not correct.
Is it rational to form beliefs not based on evidence, but instead based on practical considerations of whether the belief is in your self-interest?
Choice A: Is it rational to form beliefs not based on evidence, but instead based on practical considerations of whether the belief is in your self-interest? Could forming beliefs in this way ever be dangerous? Explain and critically discuss Pascal’s Wager. Does the argument succeed? Explain why or why not in detail, supporting your answers with reasons in detail.
Choice B: Explain the problem of evil. Which of the theodicies discussed in this module (in the readings and/or lectures) do you find most convincing? Explain a criticism of that theodicy, and discuss. Do you think any of the theodicies are ultimately successful? If so, how would you respond to the criticism of the theodicy you chose? Explain and support your answers with reasons in detail.
Choice C: Explain and critically evaluate one of the arguments for God’s existence that we learned about – either the Design (teleological) argument or the Cosmological argument, including discussion of criticisms of the argument. Ultimately, do you think that the argument is successful? If so, how would you respond to the criticism of the argument? Explain and support your answers with reasons in detail.
Guidelines: Your discussion post should be well written and structured (like a short essay – defend a clear thesis, have more than one paragraph supporting your thesis and explaining the ideas), and be at least 300 words long (and you are encouraged to write something longer for a top grade). Then post replies to at least two of your fellow students, discussing the arguments they have presented (at least one reply should be to a student who wrote on a different topic from yours). Replies should be substantive (more than just “I agree” or “I disagree”), and should advance the conversation.
Due by the end of the day on Monday, Jan 31. Replies to fellow students should be posted by the end of the day on Wednesday Feb 2.
