Based on what we learned about the Birth of Cinema, explain how motion pictures started using editing not only to make films longer but also to create connections between images. Bring examples from at least two silent films discussed in the Birth of the Cinema video lecture, in the relevant Feldman chapter or any of the recommended films under the Birth of the Cinema section.

Requirements:
you must include at least one academic reference from the compulsory reading – find an appropriate quote from a relevant Feldman chapter

and relate your claims to Feldman’s using “They argue” / “I argue” type sentences – make sure that you not only copy a quote but EXPLAIN

what the author is talking about in your chosen quotation and how it is RELEVANT to your argument –

explain what the author is saying and why you agree or disagree with them
you must support your claims with specific examples from the film you are analyzing
do not forget to properly cite the quotations you are using

Film Essay Writing:

Writing about film can be different to writing about literature. Since it is difficult to quote from a film, it is often necessary to describe the scene or frame under discussion.
Do not be afraid of describing what is happening on screen and on the soundtrack. In addition, be sure to explain how a specific scene fits into the film as a whole
(What is happening? Who are these people? What is the context of the action? You should avoid formulations like “In the scene with the elephant…”).
Good scene description within a narrative context is an important part of film analysis.

A succinct and relevant plot summary can also be very helpful but avoid lengthy and unnecessary story description.

I also suggest that you consult Timothy Corrigan’s A Short Guide to Writing About Film (2010) – syllabus: recommended reading list.
There is no need to provide timecodes for film scene discussions.
Refer to films using their accepted English language titles.
It is generally better to write, “The film shows us that…” rather than “The director shows us that…”.
