Becoming a College Student

As community college students, you are an amazingly diverse group of people–coming from a rich variety of backgrounds, cultures, and educational institutions. Some of you have been home-schooled, while others grew up with English as a second language in their household. And now that you’re in college, you are working to develop new skills that are particular to “the academy,” and that perhaps are very different from your previous practices.
Write an essay that explores what it means for you to become a college student, and what you are bringing to the college that is unique to you that will help you on this pathway. Here are some potential questions that might lead your essay (but not all of them; you’ll want to focus and/or see relationships between different key terms and ideas):
What is your “positionality” relative to WCC (Klausman xii)?
What forms of “authority” have you been taught to respect in your past, and how is that different from the forms of “authority” you’re being asked to both respect and present to the academy (Klausman 31-33)?
What types of thinking do you tend towards–“dualism, multiplicity, relativism, or commitment” (Klausman 14), and why? How does that affect your learning process?
What “modes of literacy” are you bringing with you (Klausman 225-229)?
What language is “your own best voice,” and how does that differ from or compare to other voices you use or have used in school before (Klausman 56)?
How does the way academy’s treat “exclusivity” and “Inclusivity” affect your education, and those of other students nationally or internationally?
What myths and challenges of education have you faced throughout your life, and how do you think your approach to college will tackle or challenge those myths/struggles?
Another topic related to the ideas that Active Voices brings up?
You will not be able to tackle all of these questions, but rather discuss your own background, and explore what is meaningful to you in becoming a college student and thinking in a new way.
