Bio molecule Oddysey

Purpose: This discussion will allow us to demonstrate knowledge of the unique characteristics of the four classes of biological molecules that make life possible: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. It will also provide an appreciation for the natural pattern of small components with unique properties giving rise to larger components with their own unique properties and so on.

Imagine scientists find a planet that has living organisms that resemble plants and animals on Earth; however, they did not find any evidence of the element carbon on the planet. Instead, they find a new element they call “hizzi” that is in high abundance on the terrain and is a component of the organisms. From what we know about life on our planet (Earth), the element carbon is necessary to form biomolecules that assemble and make the cell structures that make life possible. Based on this information, what properties of “hizzi” would you expect if it is being used just like carbon to support life on Earth? Discuss the properties of hizzi and its presence in each of the four classes of macromolecules you would expect to find on this planet. Be sure to thoroughly discuss the four classes of macromolecules (as they are on Earth) in your answer, giving details of their structure and function. In addition, provide an example of how each macromolecule contributes to the function of a cell on Earth.
