book of genesis

1. As Gerda Lerner explains in her foundational text, much of how the Western world (Europe and the Americas) views women’s roles was dictated by the Holy Roman Empire as it spread Christianity across these parts of the world in the first centuries of the Common Era (this term, C.E., replaces A.D., or After Death, in a secular, or non-religious, context). For this reason, it is important to begin with a study of the opening book of the Christian Bible so that we understand the characteristics of woman that have been inherited by this tradition. The secularization of the world, or the loss of religious belief systems, has only recently occurred in larger numbers, so Western culture has promulgated these founding Christian beliefs about women for centuries, and you may know some who still do today.

2. Read from Genesis, Chapters 1-3: The Book of Genesis

3. Open the Discussion Board through the blue title link above. Choose the blue box Start a New Thread. In the text box, create an ACES discussion of at least 250 words of critical thinking that answers one or more of the following questions: how does this Western creation myth reinforce gendered beliefs about power? Why is Eve tempted by the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and conversely, why are the original man and woman cautioned against partaking of it? How does desire come into it? Where does seduction come in? What is Adam’s role? Is it really about a serpent after all? Click Post.

4. Once you post your thread, you will have access to my thread and your peers’ threads. Read my thread and a few of your classmates that look interesting to you. Respond to at least one of your peer’s discussions with at least 100 words of higher-order thoughts. Your 100 words should be geared more toward the sharing of ideas than compliments; they should expand on, connect with, or counter one of your peers’ ideas to reach higher-order levels of critical thinking. Remember, “critical” does not mean negative — it means thoughtful and reflective as opposed to surface-level. *You may opt to respond to my thread posted on Monday, especially if you are on the board early in the week and want to finish the assignment.
