1). Foreign Affairs – Briefly discuss the basic tenants of US foreign policy prior to World War II. How did World War II bring about major changes in American foreign policy? Discuss foreign policy and events from 1945 to present (concentrating on the periods we discussed in class). Examine the Cold War and post-Cold War World. Mention major developments and key leaders who developed and implemented policy. How would you rate US foreign policy since1945? What do you see as the major successes and failures?
2). Civil Rights – Trace the development of civil rights and the position of African Americans in America in the 20th Century. Briefly discuss the period prior to the Second World War mentioning key figures and events. Then, discuss the post-war Civil Rights movement. Who were the leaders (persons and groups)? What tactics were used and what successes did they have? Why? Discuss specific campaigns and their outcomes. Also discuss government policy and action, including key Supreme Court and Congressional actions. In your opinion what were the successes and failures of the “Civil Rights Years?” What do you think are the most important issues in Civil Rights Today?
3). Domestic Policies and Developments – Discuss the most important domestic developments, issues and problems in the U.S. from 1945 to present. How do these changes reflect or differ from previous U.S. policies & Programs prior to the war. Be certain to address political, economic, social and cultural developments throughout the post-war years. You may want to organize your essay topically, discussing first society from 1945-present; then the political programs of the various administrations from 1945-present; then economic changes 1945-present, etc. Or, you may want to organize the essay chronologically, discussing society, culture, politics and economics of the late 40s & 50s; then the 60s; then the 70s, 80s, 90,s …etc.
