This week you are to discuss the disparities, segregation and traumatic effects. Be sure to include social, political, cultural, and other angles in this discussion. Do not restrict the discussion to one and only one topic.
Based on what you learned this week about social, economic and health disparities, discrimination and trauma answer the four questions below completely.
1. Briefly explain disparities and list at least (1) disparity that you have observed in your community and name the population you feel it has impacted the most and explain how and why.
2. After reading the article “Divided Cities lead to Differences” and watching the short BBC documentary clip inside the article on page [2], what was the purpose of the “divide in Saint Louis?” Does such as “divide” exists in your neighborhood and if so, where is that divide located and explain what exactly is it dividing?
3. Explain “White flight” what you understand the term to mean and if this is the first time you heard it. Do not copy content from the article, but summarize your response using your own words.
4. In the video “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across A Lifetime” Dr. Burke-Harris shares information on “ACE,” and how traumatic experiences during childhood manifest over time into chronic conditions. Similarly, the video “Cancer Health Disparities” explains the connection between disparities, chronic conditions and race. List at least one traumatic childhood events discussed and describe one chronic condition(s) a person may be diagnosed with over time and which racial group is most likely to experience greater disparities and mortality.
