1. Hot Topics are newsworthy articles that have some relevance to our industry (the Fashion Apparel Industry). Each student will report on 3 articles from fashion industry trade publications this semester. This is where the 2nd of the 3 articles will be submitted.
For this assignment, find an article from a fashion apparel industry trade publication such as California Apparel News (CAN) (https://www.apparelnews.net/) or Women’s Wear Daily (WWD (https://wwd.com/), Earnshaw’s (https://www.earnshaws.com/), Menswear Daily (https://wwd.com/menswear-news/). Attach a copy of the article with this assignment submission. Include a citation for the source used for this article. (title of the industry trade publication, date, volume, issue, page#’s, URL), the title of article, the article’s author, and briefly explain the general idea of the article and its connection to and impact upon the fashion industry, in your own words. The article should be directly related to concepts discussed in the textbook. Briefly discuss the connection between the article and the specific material in the textbook (vocabulary, concepts, chapters, pages).
Over the course of 16 weeks, each student is responsible for finding a total of three (3) articles from fashion apparel industry trade publications like California Apparel News (CAN) and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), Earnshaw’s, Menswear Daily (Links to an external site.). Students should be looking at trade publications each week, searching for an article that pertains to the topics covered that week. When a current, relevant, article is located, a digital copy of the article, along with the student’s analysis and summary should be submitted under one of the three “Hot Topics” assignments (of which this is one). These articles will be presented in a discussion forum, either in writing and/or in a video.
Fashion Apparel Industry Trade Publications
Fashion Apparel Industry trade publications like California Apparel News (CAN) and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD ), Earnshaw’s, Menswear Daily, and others are designed to inform designers and manufacturers (people who make the clothes), buyers (who buy, in bulk, the clothes that we, the consumers see in stores and online) and merchandisers (who are responsible for the way clothes are presented and displayed for retail), of trends way before consumers (individuals, like you and me, who buy clothes in a store or online). Industry trade publications like California Apparel News (CAN) (Links to an external site.)and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD (Links to an external site.)), Earnshaw’s (Links to an external site.), Menswear Daily (Links to an external site.), and others are designed to inform people who work in the fashion industry to supply clothes of other economic, political and global events that affect the design, manufacture and distribution of clothing.
Consumer Fashion Publications (Fashion magazines, Blogs and Trend sites)
Fashion Apparel Industry Trade publications are different from consumer fashion publications like Vogue, Lucky or Cosmopolitan, etc. Fashion Apparel Industry Trade publications are different from most fashion blogs and sites that report the trends, in that the information reported online is for consumers of fashion. The information in consumer fashion publications and websites often comes from fashion apparel industry trade publications, which spot trends way in advance of when consumers of fashion apparel are ready for them. By the time trends are reported in consumer fashion magazines, blogs and sites, the information is too old to be useful to the fashion designers who make clothes to sell to retail stores to be purchased by consumers of fashion apparel. In Fash002, students should focus on fashion apparel industry trade publications for Hot Topics assignments, and avoid consumer publications.
Also, please remember that this is a fashion apparel course, geared toward a certificate or degree in fashion apparel design. Topics should be directly related to the topics presented in the textbook, the production of clothing and textiles.
Hot topics may be shared with the class, so you must know the information in the article well enough to explain it to the class.

2. Second Post
Choose one classmate’s post to which to respond.
First, read the section of the article your classmate chose and evaluate their summary of the article. Then, provide at least one additional point or detail you can add to strengthen your peer’s summary (2-3 sentences).
Answer one of your classmate’s questions using a reliable source. This may require you to do some outside research. Remember to cite all sources fully, including in-text citations and a full reference list at the end, for full credit. If you only consulted the reading, you must provide citations for the article.
