Introduction
The goal of the introduction is to Introduce the problem area and the goal of your paper. An introduction generally has the following structure:
P1. Begin your introduction with a “hook” that grabs your reader’s attention and introduces the general topic. Try to grab your reader’s attention with something exciting, in the form of an example, quote, anecdote, interesting fact or statistics, or question. Make the reader hungry for more in the first few sentences. Try to do this short and to the point.
P2. Present the background of your topic. Mention briefly what is known about the specific research topic before you conducted your analysis. This is accomplished with a general review of the foundational research literature (with citations) that inform your study’s aims and objectives. NOTE: Research studies cited as part of the background information of your introduction should not include very specific, lengthy explanations. This should be discussed in greater detail in your theoretical framework section. Try to do this short and to the point.
P3. Point out a specific problem/gap you will be addressing in terms of the topic you just introduced. It could be that there is crucial information missing (e.g., insufficient understanding of the mechanism) or that there are inconsistent or contracting findings. End this paragraph with your statement of your research question.
P4. Explain the goal of the paper. This is usually to find a solution to the problem of the missing information by examing the role of the mediator or a solution to the contracting findings by investigating the role of the moderator. Briefly present your central argument for the mediation or moderation effect.
P5. Preview the contributions of your research. Describe the theoretical and practical contributions of your research.
End your introduction with an image of your conceptual model.
