Briefly tell the reader what purpose you believe the imagery or figurative language in the novel serves and create a thesis statement.

In this assignment, you will write an expository essay in which you find, identify, and analyze imagery and figurative language in three parts of your chosen novel from Animal Farm by George Orwell. The explanation and analysis of the imagery/figurative language should be clear, concise, and use present tense verbs, third-person subjects, and avoid generalizations. This essay should include three direct quotes from the novel.
Step 3: Essay Structure
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Begin with an attention-getting statement or hook sentence. Include the title and author of the novel you have chosen. Briefly tell the reader what purpose you believe the imagery or figurative language in the novel serves and create a thesis statement. Add several sentences that outline the body paragraphs’ main ideas; the reader should not be surprised by any content. The first paragraph should end with a transition into the first body paragraph.
Paragraph 2: How is the imagery or figurative language important to the text?
Step One: Make the claim and support it with evidence from the text. Find one specific place in the novel that uses imagery or figurative language. Include a direct quote to show this. (Do not forget to cite properly.) For example, Fitzgerald alludes to the light at the end of the dock as a metaphor for Gatsby’s yearning for his love for Daisy as well as for the American Dream. “Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy, it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock” (52).

Step Two: Analyze and dissect the quote you provide; do not summarize the actions performed or how the events unfolded. This will be written in your own words, and you want to show your understanding of any underlying meaning of the quote.
Paragraph 3: How is the imagery or figurative language important to the text?

Organization
The introduction should have a hook, a clear and relevant thesis statement, and a transition sentence into the body paragraphs.
Each body paragraph should support the thesis without presenting unrelated ideas and should flow with transition sentences from one idea to the next.
Many necessary portions of content are not included in the paper. Portions that are present may not flow well together and may result in a paper that is choppy and needs further clarity to help the reader understand the theme and topics discussed. Transitions may not have been utilized throughout.
Each section contains most of the necessary portions of content. They are mostly cohesive, but may need additional work to add further clarity. They may need better transitions between ideas.
Each section of the paper contains all necessary portions of content. Each section melds together well and tells a cohesive story. Transitions are used throughout to lead from one idea to the next, and there is a consistent flow of topics.

A clear, concise explanation of the imagery/figurative language chosen

The analysis may not meet the minimum standards. Alternatively, the examples display only one of these criteria OR tighter organization or a more academic voice in multiple places would improve the paper. There are fewer than three examples in the essay.
