Florence, Italy, is known as the “cradle of the Renaissance” because many great artworks of the period were commissioned and created there. To achieve the ambitious new goals of Renaissance art, sometimes a competition was held to find the right artist for the job – very much like what happens today!
One example is the north doors of the Florence Baptistery. In the 1300s, the south doors were created by Andrea Pisano, consisting of 28 panels depicting virtues and scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist, contained in quatrefoil designs. Almost 100 years later, in the early Renaissance, a competition was held to find the right artist for the job of completing the north doors. The artists vying for this commission were to create a relief sculpture in bronze depicting the story of the sacrifice of Isaac from the Old Testament, contained in the same quatrefoil shape. In this story, Abraham brings his son, Isaac, to be sacrificed on a mountain, as God commanded him. Once Isaac is tied up, an angel appears and stops Abraham, telling him that he has proven his faith and no longer needs to do this, and he sacrifices a ram instead.
Below are the two finalists in the competition. Both reliefs contain the same subjects: Abraham and Isaac, the angel, the ram, two servants, a donkey, and some landscape elements. However, there are differences in composition and emotional content. Look at both images carefully and consider which one you would vote for if you were a judge in this competition.
