Methodology guidelines by the university:
Students must state clearly how they carried out their empirical study. There should also be
an account of alternative approaches considered with explanation of the reasons
underpinning the chosen methods, include any software used. The account of the research design should include a description and justification of:
· Methods of data collection
· Methods of data analysis
· Checks for reliability and analysis
· Ethical considerations arising out of the research design and how these have been managed
It is recommended that students present their research design in the form of a flow diagram
that depicts both the sequencing of methods and activities and purposes of these methods
and activities. The diagram should quickly convey to the reader what was done and why.
The researcher can then develop the discussion of the methodology around this graphic,
keeping the account brief but informative.
When deciding upon the methodology, students are advised to consider each of their
research objectives individually. It may not be possible to achieve all of the objectives with a
single methodological approach. Moreover, one, or more, of those objectives, may have
been wholly met from the extant evidence reviewed. The student needs to ensure that all
data gathering and analysis procedures are transparent; a good thesis should offer the
possibility of replication such that, if the same steps were carried out again, the same
results would be obtained.
My research:
I am working for a service based company (it provides services such as men’s grooming at the customers home). The business of the company has reached its peak and is now at saturation. Need strategies to improve the business.
I am doing a survey by calling the customers by phone and asking them a bunch of questions and manually taking a note of their answers. For this the customers are divided into 3 categories:
· Recent drop offs: These are the customers who have taken services from the company and haven’t taken any service in the past 2-3 months.
· Royale(Premium) users: These are the customers who have opted for premium service offered by the company. The Royale users will get service from high rated professional compared to prime (another subscription plan, it is below Royale) users.
· High frequency users: These are the customers who take services at least 2-3 times in a month.
I have attached the survey questions for these users. The methodology should also include how we have arrived to these questions. These questions are straight forward. If you have any doubts regarding it, do contact me.
After collecting the survey, based on the survey results the plan is to modify or add new services to the Men’s grooming. It may also include re-training the professionals to improve customer satisfaction. Then launching a trial to check how the improved services are working. If the outcome of the trial is unsatisfactory then collect the survey with modified questions and based on it launch the trial. If the trial is satisfactory then launch the improved services for a wider range of customers.
The data from the survey is analysed manually, without any software aid. The trial will take account into what most of the customers need from the service.
For the results of the trial, we use the company’s software to analyse the number of customers requesting for a particular service and taking the service and their feedback on the app after taking the service. We will also compare the number customers taking the service before the trial and during the trial to estimate the response of the improved services.
The objectives of this thesis are:
· To attract new customers
· To attract regular customers to take more services
· To improve the quality of service/customer satisfaction
· To retain customers
The research that I am doing is a qualitative research. The methodology should good strategy that suits my research.
