The california tiger salamander is mainly terrestrial. These amphibians are usually slimy to lock in moisture to keep themselves wet and their bodies hydrated.

This salamander is a small amphibian that inhabits the areas around moist wetlands or sometimes even oak wood forests. The slimy creature lives in thick grasslands that protects them from the harsh environment and predators. They choose this area because most of the time there is an easy meal waiting in a leaf or under some mud. They mostly prefer worms, bug larvae, and algae while still young. But as they age they Start to eat insects, tadpoles, and invertebrates.
These animals are slowly going extinct since most of their habitats consist of forest and they are getting cut down for farming, construction, or just for property. Another reason they are going extinct is because people sometimes grab them and take them as pets without knowing that they are an endangered species.

How can we protect California tiger salamanders from extinction? Avoid handling them, salamanders have very absorbent skin, the salt and oils that human hands have can harm them. Keep the wild, don’t remove them from the wild, and try not to keep them as pets. Don’t disturb natural areas, logs and leaf litter are important habitats where salamanders reside.

The central California Distinct US fish and wildlife services are already doing their part by focusing primarily on alleviating the threat of habitat loss and fragmentation by permanently protecting breeding ponds and their adjacent uplands throughout the salamander’s range.
