General Essay Guidelines
A. Margins: One inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right)
B. Font Size and Type: 12-pt. Times New Roman font
C. Essays must be in Word format.
D. Line Spacing: Double-space throughout the essay, including the title page, body of the
paper and references.
E. Spacing after Punctuation: Space once after commas, colons, and semicolons within
sentences. Insert two spaces after punctuation marks that end sentences.
F. Alignment: Flush justify (align text to both the left and right)
G. Paragraph Indentation: 5 spaces
H. Active voice: As a general rule, use the active voice rather than the passive voice. For
example, use “We (I) predicted that …” rather than “It was predicted that …”
Specific Guidelines
I. Make sure to identify your first and last name, your student ID number and the course
number.
J. Before writing your essay, make a skeleton plan.
K. Make sure that the first few sentences identify the purpose.
L. Make sure that the material is well organized in the body, and the last few sentences
highlight the summary.
M. Correct any spelling and/or grammatical errors. You will be marked for your writing
style, grammar, etc.
N. Stay on topic throughout the essay.
O. Show that you have an in-depth understanding of the Textbook related chapters. You can
include other sources but the primary focus should be on the textbook chapters.
P. Avoid wordiness and be concise, clear and objective.
Q. A Patch-work of quotations results in a low grade.
R. You must use your own words. Reflect on readings and use your own words.
S. Fully identify your sources
T. Include a bibliography or reference list which is formatted correctly.
