Care and Services – Mobility Exercises

Mobility: Using only your non-dominant hand, put your socks and shoes on. Brush your teeth. Time how long it takes you for each task using both hands and using one hand.
How long did it take to complete the tasks with one hand vs two hands?
What were your challenges and how did you overcome them?
How could you make the tasks easier for a senior?
Hearing: Cover your ears with your hands and listen to 10-15 minutes of a news broadcast (with video).
Did you enjoy the news? Were you able to understand what the reporter was saying? How many minutes in before you thought about cheating so you could hear?
What implications would this have for a senior?
Did you make adaptations in order to “hear?” What adaptations could a senior make?
Vision: Take a piece of 8.5×11 paper and punch a hole through the middle with a pen or pencil. Hold the paper with the hole up in front of your face touching your nose and log on to your computer. Check your email and send an email to someone you know well. You can move the paper with the hole around as needed, as long as it remains touching your nose and you are looking through the hole.
Did you move the paper around a lot? Did you try both eyes to see which worked better?
What were your challenges?
What impact would this have on a senior in their daily life?
Dementia: Use your best imagination abilities to picture yourself alone at home on a sunny Sunday afternoon. You just had a good lunch and are now trying to watch your all-time favorite news channel. You can hear kids’ voices playing in the neighborhood, mixed with the occasional sprinkler splashing noise in your back yard. It is a quiet and friendly neighborhood with no history of violence. Suddenly, you hear a knock on the door; but before you can get the door, you notice that a person of the opposite sex to you politely advances in and greets you by your name. Next, this person states: “I am here you help you with your shower today.”
What would be your immediate reaction in this situation?
Would you allow a stranger to give you a shower?
What questions would you ask the stranger?
How might someone with dementia handle this situation?
