Instead of a paper, I am posting this as a discussion so that you can all share ideas. Over this course, we have talked not just about career but several key facets of work in psychology including ethics, diversity, the scientist-practitioner model, and of course the debates from our textbook. While you have talked about your career interests and goals throughout the course, this final activity is to get you thinking about this in a more formal manner. Here are some things to consider:

Your one year goal (even if tentative)

Your five year goal (even if tentative)

I get that you may not have a formal plan yet. Consider what it might take to help you decide the direction you want to go. Thus for one person a one year goal might be “get accepted to a master’s program” and another person’s might be ” read 10 articles on possible directions in the field.”

Be specific in your goals, something you can measure.

Then add the following:

How does practice play a role in my interests and/or career goals? For most of you this will be a major part. This might be practicing as a counselor, I/O professional, or even taking your knowledge to a related field. Consider if licensure is needed.

How does research play a role in my career? Explain why you answer this the way you do. Talk about the role of reading the research of others in your career.

How does diversity play a role?

How do ethics play a role and are there more than one ethics guidelines to discuss (i.e., counselors should consider ACA and APA)?

How do you feel about the nature of opposing views in our field (that is, what are your thoughts about the fact we can have well supported opposing views on many key topics)?

What are your biggest concerns about the career you have or are looking to enter?

Ultimately, it is important that any course you take have relevance for you and the more you can dig into the ideas you discussed (whether new or not) and make them relevant, the better.
