1. At least 4 typewritten pages and not more than 8. Failure to write papers of 4-8 pages will result in the
loss of one letter grade. This number excludes the works cited page.
2. Must follow MLA parenthetical documentation
3. Read the novel and write a paper which addresses how three literary tools dvelop the theme of the
novel.
4. Don’t use bold print on your paper. You must type your paper using Microsoft Word. Use 12 point
Times New Roman font and double space. You will also be required to submit your paper through
Turn It In on Canvas.
Preparation of preliminary bibliography:
1. Contains at least 5 cited sources which must include the following: one periodical (journal, magazine, or
newspaper), one book, and three other sources of your choice (One of these can be your novel; just be
sure to cite the novel within the text of your paper.) DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA. ALSO ALL
YOUR SOURCES MUST HAVE NAMED AUTHORS. NO SPARKNOTES OR CLIFF NOTES
SOURCES CAN BE USED. THIS ALSO INCLUDES LIT CHARTS, BLOGS, AND ENOTES.
2. Each source cited should be entered on the Works Cited page.
3. Please be very careful and selective when choosing sources from the internet. Many internet sites are not
published by reputable sources. Wikipedia, for example, is not a scholarly source because anyone
can submit to it. I will count off on your research paper if you use non-scholarly sources. (If it has
a name like anti-study or mega essays, common sense should tell you it is not a scholarly site.) The
Alabama Virtual Library is a great place to find scholarly source material. Also, you are NOT
allowed to use Blogs, Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, Lit Charts, ENotes, or anything like these sources.
Additionally, do not use encyclopedias or dictionaries as sources. If you have questions regarding
the reliability of any source, please contact me. Early in the semester, you will be required to turn
in a preliminary bibliography. The purpose of this is to let me check your sources before you get
too far along with the paper.
Note Taking
1. Make clear distinction between paraphrase and direct quotation.
2. Make sure all of your sources have named authors.
Documented final draft
1. You must use at least 5 sources: one periodical, one book, and three sources of your choice, all of which
have been cited in the paper. Don’t forget that all of your sources must have named authors.
2. Place documentation within the text, using MLA form.
3. Your writing should be original. Do not fill your paper with one quote after another. Along with some
direct quotes use paraphrased material and original ideas.
4. You should write your paper in third person—no first person (I, Me,) or second person (you, your).
5. Paper should be typed, and each page of the body should be numbered and adequately documented.
6. The works cited page should also be numbered and will be the last page of the paper, but will not count
toward the required 4 pages.
7. Use only one side of the paper and double space. Use a 12 Point Times New Roman font size. (Do not
use bold print.)
8. Quotations of more than 4 lines should be indented and double spaced without quotation marks.
9. Place documentation within the text of the paper.
10. Include a works cited page which is made up only of the sources actually cited within the paper.
Failure to do so will result in the loss of one letter grade.
