Children’s Cartoons
Directions: Watch at least one hour of children’s cartoons, making use of at least two different television stations. You can use either after school or Saturday morning cartoons, old or new works also. It is important to pick two cartoons that are geared toward this age group (3-6 yr olds). Observe and document the following along with answer in the following questions.
Number of violent acts during each segment
Number of prosocial acts during each segment
Number of male and female characters
Number of animal characters that are given human characteristics
What aspects of each program are most likely to appeal to preschoolers, and why?
Might any of the program content be confusing to them? Why?
What might a child learn from watching each show?
What is the number of male and female characters?
How are the male and female characters dressed?
What are the jobs of the male and female characters?
Which character cares for children, protects others, shows nurturing behavior?
Which character displays aggression?
Think about the information presented about gender stereotypes. How might a boy or girl feel about the cartoons you watched? Will this cartoon have an effect on their self-esteem?
Summarize the information from the cartoons that you watched. You will turn in a report that summarizes the information from the cartoons that you watched. Think critically about the information. Be sure to include the name and station of the cartoon. Include your personal reactions.
