Case Study Kim’s Story

In this assignment, you are required to differentiate and evaluate concepts and theories as applied to complex social scenarios regarding the risk factors, correlations and theoretical foundations for delinquent offending. The assignment will provide the basis for an analytical application of these elements to a hypothetical scenario and require you (the student) to construct a prevention and control program utilizing successful strategies and evidence-based solutions. This assignment should take approximately four hours and be approximately 5 pages in length.
Kim is a 15-year-old high school student who was recently arrested for assault. This is her second arrest for assault. Her grandmother, with whom she lives, thinks they may have been gang-related. Kim also has a record of truancy and has always struggled in school. She is failing every course, and her teachers have little faith in Kim since they learned of her arrest. They are actually intimated by her. Her probation officer explains that she is defiant and angry during their meetings. He has tried to explain consequences of offending, yet Kim does not seem to think of those consequences before she acts out. Kim shares her home with three cousins ages 16 through 19; they have all dropped out of school and the family is currently receiving welfare support.
Part One: Apply a minimum of eight theories of youth crime included in Chapters 3 through 6 of the course textbook. Included as one of your theories, discuss why rational choice and deterrence may not apply to Kim. Explain which theories best apply to Kim’s situation. Define the theory and then apply it to Kim’s particular circumstances as an explanation for her delinquent behavior.
Part Two: Utilize the theories you applied in Part One as a basis for a multi-systemic prevention, treatment and control program. Include at least five components based on the theoretical basis for Kim’s delinquent behaviors, and discuss how those components will apply to prevent, treat or control Kim’s future behaviors.
Here is an example of how you are expected to respond to this assignment.
