Throughout this program and in your professional career, peer review is an essential part of the writing process that all successful writers engage in at some point. This practice is an integral part of refining scholarly writing to become an effective writer in your academic and professional fields.

The process of producing academic and professional writing involves the following three steps: drafting, revising, and editing. Peer review is most helpful after a completed draft is produced and there is still time to make substantial changes. As a writer you can learn from peer-reviewers areas of strength in your paper, parts that need clarification, gaps in logic, or unanswered questions. The purpose of peer review is to help determine which parts of your paper are effective, and which are unclear, incomplete, or unconvincing.

Active engagement in the peer review process is an opportunity for you to learn how to write for an audience and prepare you for work in the professional world. The quality of your ideas and your work will be judged by how well you can communicate in writing to diverse audiences and stakeholders. Thorough participation in this peer review assignment will help you and your peer shape your written language for effective communication with readers. You will gain the skill to construct a convincing argument by anticipating and answering counter-arguments that readers might pose. This is an important skill when enacting aggregate and systems-level change. Objectives

1. Introduction and Epidemiology: Please introduce your topic area and discuss, for the disorder, its prevalence (US, Worldwide or other – be specific) and incidence, and any relevant variation in prevalence and incidence (e.g., gender and age differences).
2. Symptoms: What are the primary symptoms of the disorder? Don’t just list them – explain them. How is the disorder diagnosed? Who makes the diagnosis?
3. Etiology: What is the current thinking about the disorder’s etiology (cause), particularly with respect to the brain? Is there a genetic component? Are there interesting environmental components or gene x environment interactions?
4. Cognitive Neuroscience Findings: What are some relevant cognitive neuroscience findings for the disorder? Cognitive neuroscience in this sense is broadly defined to include any field of study combining mind/behaviour and brain. You will lose points if you only discuss neuroscience findings or if you only discuss cognitive findings. Relevance includes application to the etiology of the disorder, its diagnosis, or its treatment. It could also be how the disorder has changed our understanding of Cognitive Neuroscience, or a combination of these meanings. Findings that count would include EEG, MEG, fMRI, TMS, PET or other imaging strategies, or traditional lesion type approaches (e.g., neuropsychology).
5. Treatment and Course: How is the disorder treated medically and/or psychologically? Concentrate on the best practice, or standard of care, even if that standard is not adequate. If the usual treatments for the disorder are ineffective, are any new treatments on the horizon that are informed by Cognitive Neuroscience? Alternative approaches should only be considered if you can tie them logically to the underlying neuroscience of the disorder. What age is the disorder usually diagnosed? What is the disease progression, if any? What is the outcome, with or without treatment?

Tech Buddy Project
The goal of this assignment is for you to help older adults enhance tech literacy by coaching, mentoring, and supporting them as they use technology. This year we will partner with Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing (Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing | (fpciw.org) to help its residents learn technology. Front Porch is one of Southern California’s largest non-profit providers of retirement living communities and affordable housing. For the past several decades, FPCIW has been at the forefront of incorporating innovative technology into the lives of older adults to enhace their well-being.

Select one older adult around you who are aged 65 or older (e.g., parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, clients, etc.), explore their needs or problems and how the needs or problems can be solved using technology, set up an achievable goal with your mentee, design a 5-week technical assistance or training program, and deliver one-on-one assistance or training as a tech buddy. Make sure that you design the program based on your mentee’s interest levels and circumstances. Be flexible (e.g., time per session, topic areas, how often you will meet, etc.) and think of ways to foster the mentee’s curiosity and motivation.
Examples of the competencies that you can help them learn include:
– How to use a laptop, smartphone, tablet, or another device
– How to navigate the Internet
– How to do Google searches
– How to use email
– How to video chat with family and friends
– Computer safety and security
– What is social media
– Etc.

Based on your experience on Tech Buddy Project, you will write a brief paper about what you have accomplished through the project and your reflections on it. The paper may include
1) a brief description about your mentee and his/her technical needs or problems,
2) project goal and technical assistance or training provided,
3) measures used to assess whether your mentee achieved the goal,
4) your reflection on the project experience (e.g., new awareness, discovery, lessons, etc.), and
5) discussion on how the project and what you’ve learned in the course altogether informed your views on gerontechnology or your future career.

The paper should be no longer than 5 pages，double-spaced, with a 1-inch margin on all sides and 12pt font size.

Pay special attention to point five, discussing how the project and what you learned in the course together can affect your views on eldertech or your future career. I will upload the Powerpoint of the recent course below.

Please search for a short text (part/section of a text) in the world of entertainment (no more than two pages) in a language that you know other than English and create a multimodal translation into English for children (age 8-11).

In a well-organized essay (no more than 1020 words), please answer the following questions:

Provide a brief description and introduction to the source text.
Discuss the reasons behind your choice of specific non-linguistic modes. (i.e., reasons for choosing pictures not video as a mode besides words)
Explain the textual elements that influenced your decision to use this specific color, character…etc. in your translation.
Reflect on your translation experience, including any challenges or issues you encountered, and whether you are satisfied with your multimodal translation.
