A friend was recently diagnosed with strep throat. One week after his treatment, he redeveloped the infection. In conversation, your friend tells you, “I must have become immune to the drug the doctor gave me!”
a. Discuss the validity of your friend’s statement, providing evidence in support of or refuting his claim.
b. After further conversation, your friend tells you that he stopped taking his initial antibiotics after 2 days because he “felt 100% better.” Explain how this action might have played a role in the redevelopment of his infection.
c. When he returned to his physician, she ordered a test to determine which antibiotic should be prescribed to treat his reinfection. Summarize a test that could be used to obtain this information.

Compare/Contrast essay provides the chance for you to find the similarities in things and the differences between things. Do not, however, confuse this essay for a checklist. The C/C essay allows you to argue for a purpose: to explain similarities and differences between two things; or to choose between two things (or evaluate them). The subjects must have a clear basis for comparison: two ways of paying for college; two schools of political thought; two ways of recycling, etc. This is where the old adage comes from: “You can’t compare apples with oranges.”

As with any other argument, you must have a thesis that explains WHY you are comparing/contrasting two subjects. What is your purpose? What do you hope to uncover or evaluate by comparing/contrasting? For example, you might compare/contrast two movies to persuade your friend to see one and not the other. You might compare/contrast two ways of paying for college to explain the various ways a person could go about it.
It’s important to organize your essay in a clear, understandable manner: either subject by subject or point by point. Subject by subject would explain all the advantages and disadvantages of paying for college using loans; then it would explain all the advantages and disadvantages of paying for college by getting a job. Point by point organization would take up the individual advantages (loans: have more time for school work, don’t have to be paid until after college is complete; easy to apply for) and THEN take up all the disadvantages before doing the same thing with getting a job. I strongly encourage you to write an outline, no matter how brief, to organize your thoughts before you start writing. Don’t forget a good title!
This 750 word (minimum) essay can be written without sources. If you decide to use sources, provide a Works Cited page and in-text citations (see Chapter 22: Documenting Sources). It is due June 26 at midnight.

Discuss the findings of interviews with three individuals who have worked in formal organizations over an extended period of time. All three individuals should work in different organizations. They can be family members or family friends. By researching and writing this report, you will learn how to interview people, analyze interview data to write a paper, learn about the working lives of people, and perhaps most importantly, from an academic point of view, learn abstract thinking as you relate your findings to the class materials.

Format of the report: Start with an introduction describing the respondents and their work. Then trace their work life history. What job did they first start out with? Did they change their career? What different jobs have they had? And then discuss their current job. What do they do at work? How do the work systems impede or help them accomplish their work goals? What are the difficulties they face at work? Discuss their coworkers. How much cooperation do they get from coworkers? How much of their work depends on their coworkers’ contribution? How much support they get from their supervisor? How is their performance evaluated and how does it affect their work, and their future? What factors motivate them? What de-motivates them? What part of their job do they enjoy the most? The least? What could be done to make their work a more enjoyable experience? What could their organization or supervisors do to help them? What stops the supervisors from helping them? What are the turf issues? What are their future plans? Will they change careers? When do they plan to retire? What will they do after they retire? What are the similarities and differences in the experiences of the three respondents? You may add more questions.
It is necessary to find common themes from the book “$2 A Day” and the data you get from the interview. In other words, you should be able to relate your findings to the topics covered in class (abstract thinking).
The report should be approximately eight pages in length, typed and double-spaced with the font Times New Roman 12 points.

We’ve discussed three acellular infectious agents last week – viruses, prions and viroids. This essay should be based on those.
Infection by any one of these can have serious consequences to human health and/or economic wellbeing. In the event of an outbreak, it is important to be able to identify and contain these pathogens to avoid potentially deadly outbreaks. Your assignment is to choose one of the three infectious agents and consider the epidemiological features of your selection. By epidemiological features we mean: Can you characterize the causative organism? Where does the disease come from? Who is affected? How do they acquire the pathogen? What are the symptoms and risk factors? How is the disease dealt with once it is discovered in order to prevent its spread? You can choose one pathogen based on the general scenario described below.
For this assignment you now work for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agriculture Research Service. You have been assigned to characterize a new epidemic that has spread rapidly at a farm in Montana. You arrive at the farm observe the livestock, crops and farm workers for signs of illness. You sample the fluids and tissue of several affected organisms and bring them to a state-of-the-art USDA laboratory for analysis. The outbreak is fictional but all the information – from the organism, to how it is acquired, to the symptoms it causes – should be legitimate for the infectious agent. I have intentionally left out these and other details in the scenario. You will fill in the details in your essay by addressing the following questions.
What is the affected organism (animal/plant/human or any combination)?
What are the symptoms exhibited by the affected organism(s)?
What is the pathogen that you have identified after analysis of the infected material?
How where you able to identify the agent in a laboratory?
Describe the etiology. How did the infection make its way to the farm?
Trace the fictional outbreak from its origins either locally, nationally or internationally.
Knowing how the infectious agent is disseminated, what recommendations do you make to the farm manager for containment and treatment of infected organisms?
Your essay should be approximately 2 pages in length, double-spaced in 10-12 point font.
