After you choose and carefully read through the case study, answer the following questions:
How did globalization change some people’s lives? How did the changes lead to a conflict?
What was the proposed solution(s) to the conflict? How satisfactory was the solution to each party?
Can you imagine a way to avoid or resolve similar conflicts in the future, even if rapid globalization continues?
Over the years, in what ways has your region become more globalized?
How can you see the results of this today? If you cannot see the results of this today, why?
The journal entry should be about a page in length. If applicable, be sure to cite any resources you use to support your learning journal.

Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.
Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.

Sample Thesis Statement: Social media, particularly Facebook, does not promote loneliness because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus). *Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments, but be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not think that you are changing your stance. Format Requirements:

Read the attached essay on a discourse community by Tony Mirabelli, “Learning to Serve,” and answer the following questions, submitting your responses here.

Questions:
What is the author’s thesis/hypothesis about service work?
How does the author choose to define literacy? What kinds of practices are involved in his definition, and how is it different than a definition of literacy that might be given in the context of formal education?
What is the main genre of communication between waiters and customers? Why could this be considered a genre (what are the common characteristics that all of these share)?
Why do waiters have to be “literate” with the menu? What does Mirabelli mean by this? How could food items differ from restaurant to restaurant, and how could this impact an interaction between a waiter and a customer?
What does Mirabelli mean when he says waiters have to be able to “read” not only the menu, but also the customer? What is an example, besides the one in the essay, where a waiter would have to “read” a customer and decide how much power to give them? What is an example of why a waiter might manipulate the customer by interpreting the menu in a particular way?
Why do you think the author chose to include the script of several interactions between waiters and customers? What purpose does that serve, in terms of supporting his overall argument about restaurant literacy?
What is “emotional labor,” and how does it relate to interpreting a menu?
The conclusion begins with a summary of what the essay has discussed, but then states that, though these things are true, there is “much left unconsidered in this chapter.” Why do you think the author would bring up other aspects of this discourse community in the conclusion that he didn’t discuss in the essay?

Some of the trends in global cinema that are discussed in Chapter 12 of our text arose in an effort to address the struggles of a society at the time, make political statements, or effect social change. Many of them were considered controversial at the time. Discuss examples of more recent films you have seen that you believe address controversial issues, make political statements, or attempt to effect social change, in direct or indirect ways.
