INTRO: In popular American society, education is often considered universally good for you. It is almost never considered bad. Everyone from your parents to important leaders say “Get your education, and you will do well.” However, bell hooks, Ira Shore, and Jeff Duncan-Andrade seems to argue for a more political view of education. They view it as a tool that can be used for enslavement or empowerment, a social system that helps builds conformity for the status quo or decolonization and liberation for a new consciousness and a new society. For them, it all comes down to whether educators are teaching critical thinking or not.

ESSAY QUESTION: According to Nikole Hannah-Jones, bell hooks, Ira Shore, or Duncan-Andrade, how does critical thinking function to help foster personal or societal liberation?

Demonstrate an insightful way of answering the question using the tools of critical thinking we have developed in this unit.

Focus more on analysis with only minimal use of summary (imagine your audience has already read hooks and Duncan-Andrade) and has already engaged in discussion). They need your unique analysis; not a summary of their arguments.

Write no less than 800 words. TIP Because this is a short writing assignment, focus on what you believe to be the most compelling aspect of hooks, Shore, or Duncan-Andrade’s argument.

Thomson acknowledges that fetuses are persons and thus
have the right to life. Given this, how
does she argue that most abortions are morally permissible? Can we have an abortion in every possible
circumstance? Give an example of a
situation where she would argue that an abortion is not permissible (your example must be significantly different from
the one she gives in the text). Explain
how she argues for that conclusion. Raise at least one objection to her position
and then explain how she might respond to your objection.

2. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSS) is prevalent in our Veteran’s returning from combat. Suicide rates among returning Veterans is high (every 22 minutes a Veteran commits suicide). Once you have found three, evaluate them for how well they integrate text and graphics, using Schriver’s principles discussed in the document located in Readings & Resources. Write a brief essay on the types of graphics you are observing and what principles of integration are being used (or not used) for the sites. The essay should be 1-2 pages long; it should include an introduction and conclusion. When you have completed your assignment, save it as a Word document and submit it via the Text and Graphics Essay folder under the Assignments tab. This will be counted as a daily grade. This assignment is due June 21st.
