Review “Resisting Requests to Act Unethically” in the textbook. What are two tactics Rob can use without leaving his job?

Carol, a senior manager in Countem & Weep, LLP, encourages Rob, her junior manager, to bill Countem & Weep’s clients for his commute time, and identify it as “meet and confer with senior manager.” Carol explains that she will then adjust her own billing sheet to match this entry. Carol tells Rob that all other Countem & Weep junior and senior managers engage in this practice, and that clients have never questioned such entries. Rob is not sure whether this would be an ethical action. Review “Resisting Requests to Act Unethically” in the textbook. What are two tactics Rob can use without leaving his job?

common ground

For this discussion activity, you will read three different types of written arguments–an article, blog entry, and opinion piece (see the links below)–that concern what many have dubbed “ The Crisis in the Humanities.”
“Budget cuts at SUNY Albany to hit academic programs”
Actions
Stanley Fish, “The Crisis of the Humanities Officially Arrives http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/11/the-crisis-of-the-humanities-officially-arrives/
(Links to an external site.)
Gregory A Petsko, “A Faustian Bargain” http://genomebiology.com/2010/11/10/138
(Links to an external site.)

Briefly describe the rhetorical situation and the central problem addressed in these texts.
For each text, a) identify the argument, b) list any fallacies present (provide examples from the text), and c) state how the author establishes common ground.
Explain how establishing common ground in one of the texts is an effective rhetorical tool or particularly persuasive.
Finally, remember that in order to be eligible to receive full credit for this discussion post, you must complete the discussion prompt and support your claims with evidence from the readings above.

personal values

Societal guidelines sometimes do not provide clear direction in terms of ethical behaviour because the situations which cause us to experience ethical dilemmas vary so much. The rules in some situations are difficult to figure out; they vary from workplace to workplace, from community to community, and they evolve over time.
As a criminal justice professional, you must develop and adhere to some personal ethical standards of your own. These standards of moral conduct and behaviour must be within the bounds dictated by society, while meeting the expectations placed upon you as a member of a justice-related agency.
It is helpful to explore some of your values in some different contexts. Let’s have a look at Bob, who is a parole officer. Listen and watch as he deals with his client, then follow the instructions that follow the video.
In your initial post, describe the ethics of the situation as you see them. Is there an ethical conflict here for you? What would you do? How would you decide? Then comment on at least three other postings in this discussion for full marks. (See the discussion rubric for a full guide to how marks are allotted for this discussion.)
Please note: Although I do not comment on every post in this discussion, I will read them all.

Cancer

Rates of new diagnoses and rates of death from all cancers combined declined significantly in the most recent time period for men and women overall and for most racial and ethnic populations in the United States, according to a report from leading health and cancer organizations. The drops are driven largely by declines in rates of new cases and rates of death for the three most common cancers in men (lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers) and for two of the three leading cancers in women (breast and colorectal cancer). New diagnoses for all types of cancer combined in the United States decreased, on average, almost 1 percent per year from 1999 to 2006. Cancer deaths decreased 1.6 percent per year from 2001 to 2006.
