A woman who is engaged in prostitution is more likely to find herself vulnerable to theft, assault, and other types of violent crimes. High-risk behaviors such as this create an increased likelihood of more violent crimes. Another woman works in a white-collar job and lives in the suburbs. She lived in a safe neighborhood, did not talk to strangers, kept her doors locked at all times, and parked her car in a safe location when she went shopping. Widowed at 50, Sally had a good job and was financially secure. Although she lived alone, her children came to visit, and she also belonged to a local singles group at her church. Although she was relatively happy, Sally was lonely at times. She started looking online for dating organizations to see if there were men her age who would be compatible. Then Sally met Harry, who seemed like a really nice man. He too had taken to the Internet after his wife had run off, and he wanted companionship and maybe even romance. They e-mailed each day for 2 weeks and sent pictures. She finally got brave and called Harry. He was charming, kind, and articulate. She quickly realized that Harry had much in common with her. He really wanted to come and visit, but he was still reeling from the divorce and had no money to fly across the country. He was trying to fix up the car his wife had left behind, but it needed some repair work. Could she loan him the money just for a few weeks till he paid off his final divorce costs? So Sally offered to cover his car repair expenses so they could meet in person and sent Harry a check for $3,000. Harry immediately cashed the check and never contacted Sally again.

Leading, managing, and following encompass critical elements to the practice of nursing as a profession(Bleich & Kist, 2014). Across the clinical spectrum, nursing comprises the cornerstone of the health care system. Playing the integral role of keeping patients safe; acute observation, vigilance, knowledge touching on care delivery processes, and willingness to act are as critical as they are mandatory. How one executes such actions demonstrates leading, managing, and following.
Leading entails executing decision-making associated with actions made in unexplored, complex, and hazardous circumstances that invite the leader to assess the context, create and adapt strategies premised on implicit knowledge and scientific verification (Bleich & Kist, 2014). Actions associated with leading include decision making and action setting that involves the use of principles to guide the process, communicating the directions while projecting courage (Bleich & Kist, 2014). Such qualities inspire security and confidence, thus enhancing the work team as it fosters reasonable risk-taking.
Conversely, managing entails a process characterized by directing others by a set of derived practices and procedures that are evidence-based and satisfy pre-established outcomes premised on recurrent clinical situations (Bleich & Kist, 2014). Management of pain encumbers a managing action and propels the work team by generating enthusiasm(Bleich & Kist, 2014).Managing differs from leading as the activities demanded occur in clinical situations whose sequential actions are prescribed and outcomes known. (MacPhee, 2014). On the flip side, Followership concerns engaging leaders and managers through contribution in identifying the problem, task completion, and returning responses for analysis by providing harmonizing, assertive and healthy actions (MacPhee, 2014). Through this, the nurse promotes clinical and organizational outcomes that boost the work team.
These positions aren’t fixed thus allowing the nurse to move from one position to another. An example is where the nurse goes through making an assignment, solving family and patient problems, mentoring staff and conducting patient education.

In work environments it is important to have leaders, managers and followers. Health care is no exception. In order to provide the care needed to our clients all three components need to be in place. Leadership is the process of engaged decision making linked with actions taken in the face of complete, unchartered, or perilous circumstances present in clinical situations for which no standardized solution exists (Themes, 2016) Nurse leaders can be found in all levels of healthcare from charge nurses to administration. In contrast to leadership where they are engaged in the decision-making process, management guides others through a set of derived practices and procedures that re evidence-based and known to satisfy pre-established outcomes based on repeated clinical situations (Themes, 2016) A nurse manager does not need to be only in upper-level management too guide others to follow evidence-based practice. Managers are seen more in clinical situations where situations are repetitive with known outcomes, such as treatment and recovery for a broken bone. Leaders and managers alike need followers that engage with others and contribute to problem identification, completing tasks, and providing feedback for evaluation (Themes, 2016) Followers support the leader and the manager through their actions helping promote success of the team. The nurse as a follower is not a passive role but rather a key component in collaboration with the leader and manager. All three aspects are required for a team to provide the best quality care to the client and work smoothly as they are doing this. Knowing ones role is very important as a nurse.
These roles in the team are fixed, yet a nurse can move from one role to another throughout their career. To begin in a follower role the nurse will learn the proper procedures and evidence-based practice to perform, this knowledge will be essential if the nurse ever wants to move to a management role where the nurse would help guide others. In a preceptor position, a nurse is guiding and training a newer nurse to the position and role they are in. This preceptor would have to have the knowledge of the policies and procedures of their facility as well as evidenced-based practice to pass on this knowledge and how to implement it into the care of the clients. Moving forward the same nurse could reach up to a leader position when sitting on a committee or board to improve aspects of patient care or staff well-being in decision making processes that create new policies. In our recent culture of living and working in a pandemic this role is essential in promoting health and safety for the clients and staff where no standard solution existed.
