GOAL: The goal of this assignment is for students to develop a professional statement of student affairs to serve as the foundation of ones own future practices and dispositions in the student affairs profession. This will be a foundational document, which students will continue to build upon in preparation for their future job search. Many employers who recruit for student affairs positions will require candidates to provide a professional statement or be able to explain orally their career interest and commitment to the profession. Students will draw on how their learning in this course will shape their future practices and dispositions as a student affairs professional/practitioner.
Content: A professional statement should address the following and include material from the textbook and course to support your statements:
Why are you interested in a career in student affairs? What first sparked your interest in this field?

Students are expected to complete a 1000-word term paper on their choice of a historical topic that will be provided by the instructor. This paper is to be typed, double spaced, and submitted on CANVAS in the dropbox. The paper must correctly use at least four scholarly sources with text citation and a reference page. Writing a Paper
The term paper will consist of two distinct parts. The first part is the literature review. In the first step you will use scholarly articles to read and discover what others are saying about your research question. After you have read and reviewed studies related to your research question,

you will need to create a narrative description of what you discovered (this is part two). As you write you will need to remember that the purpose of a literature review is to:
Inform the reader of the knowledge and ideas centered around your research question
Inform the reader of your reason for exploring your research question
Step One: Plan
Find a focus- Make sure that your work is organized around ideas- not the sources but a direction or position that they will support. As suggested: start with the table of contents, select a chapter (broad topic), select subtopics from chapter headings, and identify two or three areas.
Create a working thesis- Unlike other types of research papers your thesis does not create an argument or a position. What it does do is to create a way of looking at the research around your topic.
Think about elements of organization- This means that you must consider the way that the information will be presented. Creating an outline of topics and subtopics is a helpful way to organize.
Step Two: Writing (Introduction, Body, Conclusion)
Introduction (1-page)
o Define the general topic, issue, or area of concern
o Point out trends in the published research in the area or conflicts in the theory, methodology, evidence, and conclusions, or gaps in the research or a new perspective
o Detail your reasons for a review of the literature on your research question. Explain your stance and organizational structure
Body (4-6 pages): Its important to consider how you will present the sources you found. You may want to consider the following methods-
o Chronological- Organize the research in the order it was conducted
o By publication- You may group sources by the type of research they present or the area/field of research (for example: government reports).
o Trends- Categorizing your sources this way will present changes in data interpretation over time.
o Thematic- Organizing your ideas around topics or issues. This organizational structure presents an emphasis on ideas or themes.
o Methodological- This approach groups research studies by the way the research was conducted.
o In this section, be sure to include:
The current situation in regard to your research question
The history or related ideas that have influenced the development of your issues identified in your research question
Conclusion: (2-3 pages)
o Summarize the major points of significant studies and articles but your attention on the focus of your position
o Evaluate the current thinking on your research question. This may be a place for you to suggest that there are flaws in the research, theories, findings, or areas of study

Additional Information from professor The goal of the initial paper is to determine whether you understand explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge. For example, Nonaka and Takeuchi point out that there are two types of knowledge: (1) explicit knowledge and (2) tacit knowledge. The explicit knowledge is generally contained in manuals and operating procedures. However, tacit knowledge is learned only by experience and communicated indirectly through metaphor and analogy. In western society, especially the U.S, managers focus on explicit knowledge. However, the Japanese focus on tacit knowledge. Nonaka and Takeuchi argue that learning how to transform tacit into explicit knowledge is the key to success in business.
After a brief introduction and the problem statement (I don’t see a problem statement in your paper), you need to list the research topics/questions. Here, you will need to make a case for why the problem and solution you have proposed to this study (paper) is vital to the success of Amazon’s operation. Although your chapter one discussion is on the right track, you have primarily discussed Porter’s five forces model. There is no discussion on how to transform tacit into explicit knowledge. How do you relate this knowledge to buyers, IT staff, etc.? What is your strategy to better-utilized software’s functionality? What is the methodology to train instructors, staff, and IT personnel? You also need to provide additional peer-reviewed articles for the MIS, Knowledgebase, and other related articles to strengthen your analysis as well. There are also grammatical errors in your document (Porter’s last name needs to be capitalized)
