Analyze the case and opinion in Keith v. County of Oakland, 2013 U.S. App. LEXIS 595 (6th Cir.) located in your textbook on pp. 337-342.
Write a case study review of Judge Griffins opinion that answers the questions below. Support your review with analysis and evidence from the unit reading and outside sources.
What are the legal issues presented in this case? Did the plaintiff establish a valid claim of failure to reasonably accommodate? What did the appeals court decide?
What accommodations was Keith requesting? Was it reasonable? Support your opinion with an argument based on the course concepts and existing legal evidence or precedents.

Describe THREE of the main criticisms of Rowe and Kahns (1998) Theory of Successful Aging discussed in the class.

If you write in a clear and concise manner and answer the

Activity Theory, Rowe and Kahns (1999) Theory of Successful Aging, and the WHO
(2002) Model of Active Ageing):
a) Conceptualize and describe the concept of active
engagement in later life. Explain how each theory understands the concept of
active engagement and how the concept of active engagement fits into the
broader theory. (15 points)
b) Imagine that there are 3 different community centers
(Center A, Center B, and Center C). Center A develops a leisure program based
on the theory of Active Aging. Center B develops its program based on the
Theory of Successful Aging. Center C develops a leisure program based on the
Model of Active Ageing. Using the applicable theories, describe the types of
programming that each community center might offer and why. (10 points)

a) Describe THREE of the main criticisms of Rowe and Kahns
(1998) Theory of Successful Aging discussed in the class. Explain how these
criticisms apply to Rowe and Kahns (1998) Theory of Successful Aging and
whether or not you agree with each criticism and WHY. (10 points).
b) Pick TWO other theories of Successful Aging from the
following list: Disengagement theory, Theory of Harmonious Aging, OR Resiliency
and Aging. Apply 2 of the criticisms described in part A to two of these
theories. Briefly describe the main idea behind the theory. Explain to what
extent those criticisms apply to each theory. Why or why not? (15 points).
c) Of the 3 theories described in part a & b which do
you think is the most effective at helping us understand the concept of
successful aging and best addresses some of the criticisms raised in the
literature and WHY? Please be critical in your answer. (5 points).

Question 3
Carl is 72 years old. He is widowed and has no children or
grandchildren. When he was younger, Carl worked as a builder and general
laborer. Carl has serious arthritis which has limited his mobility. Using what
you have learned about historical trends in aging, describe and compare Carls
life in the US if he were living in 1850 versus if he were living in 2015. You
could describe where he might be living, the attitudes towards aging he might
be experiencing, the kind of health care that might be available to him, and
the ways in which developments in legislation around aging might affect his
financial security, funding for health care, and rights as an older person. (15
points).

a) Develop an age-friendly community. Give your community a
name. Explain how your age-friendly community is designed to meet criteria on
the WHO Age-Friendly Communities list. Provide at least one example for each of
the categories. (18 points).
b) In your hypothetical community there are three residents
described below. For each of the 3 residents below, explain how your
age-friendly community would function for that person. Integrate the concept of
universal design into your community and your responses. Use the WHO model of
Active Ageing, and one other theory from the course to help shape your
community and the resources provided to support each community member. (12

Resident #1 Tom
Tom (aged 74) has Alzheimers Disease. Tom is single, has no
children, and depends on professional help and support in order to live on his
own. George lives alone in his own apartment in your community.
Tom has had many different jobs over the years. During the
last years of his working life, he was a truck driver. His retirement pension
is relatively small.
Tom is in good physical condition. He enjoys walking around
indoors and outdoors. As dementia causes disorientation, Tom needs help finding
the way.
Toms dementia makes him dependent on help for remembering everyday
activities and managing his personal finances in order to be able to live by
himself. Tom enjoys different social activities but he does not always
remember to take the initiative.
Resident #2 Maria
Maria (aged 69) is a retired teacher. She lives in a small
house in the community with her daughter Laura, and her grand-daughter Tiana
who is 14 months old. Their family ties are strong, and they have daily contact
with each other.
Maria has a pension but she is not wealthy. Laura is
partially dependent on Maria for support.
Maria has cardiac disease. She has to monitor her heart
condition regularly and adjust her medications carefully. She is dependent on
daily exercises. She has some physical limitations and walks with a cane. She
often takes care of her grand-daughter and want to be able to take her around
the neighborhood.
Maria enjoys learning new things. She wants to have the
opportunity to obtain new knowledge and contribute to her community.
Resident #3 Elaine
Elaine is 85 years old. She lives with her husband Tyrone in
a home in your community. Elaine is in good health and has no major physical
limitations. She and Tyrone just recently moved into the neighborhood. They
dont know anyone in the community and want to develop some friendships with
others in the area.
Elaine and Tyron are comfortably well-off. They have a good
pension and enjoy travelling. Lately they are starting to think about what
might happen in a few years if one of them becomes ill.
Elaine loves to be physically active. She is looking for
exercise programs in your community. She is highly engaged in her community.
She wants to be involved in some way as a volunteer in your community.
